Ok, not exactly "Assault Weapons" as the media calls them but semi auto versions.
I can't stop looking for them for sale but I don't know all the different kinds. Daewoo, Galil, AR-180, Leader Dynamics. Just to name a few. What uncommon rifles and carbines do you lust for or own. Please post pics if you got them. |
|
Don't ever buy a Leader. Complete POS. There was good reason why few were imported and sold, once word got out there was no demand.....buy a Daewoo instead. Not that common either, but they do work. Pass on the wire sliding stock model, get the solid side folder stock variation. If you want to live large, SBR it, back in the day someone did a write-up on one where they shortened the gas system as well, pretty solid looking little piece of work, very compact. Of course these days you'd need a shorty can and a mount of some type to get rail on it for your EoTech/Aimpoint/whatever.
EDIT TO ADD: Well, I Google'd around and it turn out there is someone who can do all this work for you. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=441542278 |

Here's my contribution... my AR70 "home build". It's a great rifle; I'm surprised it never really caught on. My favorite Assault Weapon........thats easy. Mine is also WW2 Vintage as well It would undoubtedly be the Sturmgewehr 44 or "STG44". Also known as the MP44 as well But its a complete unicorn for me...........I am sure I will never have a chance to own a real one. But I do have one of the .22 versions! Obviously not mine.......but what a beauty! http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/ae93/RaccoonRough/StG44_zps376ec1ce.jpg This is one that has been on my "to get" list for some time now. I have a "top ten" list that has two left on the list to get. The STG44 and the Steyr AUG. I wanted to get one of the new semi-auto STG44s when they were imports a few years ago, but could not shell out that kind of money ($3K) at the time. One day though. There are not too many "assault rifles" that I have a want or need for other than those listed. An AR-180 would be nice. I alreday have my semi-auto FALs, AK, ARs, and TAVOR. I would like to get a semi-auto M1918 BAR. |
|
That's exactly the info I was looking for. Now I have to do more research and find out what some of these guns are.
I've heard about the Bushmaster but used to think they were ugly, funny, now I think they are cool. AR-70? Never heard of one before. I'm really into the stamped steel guns. I was actually looking at a MPAR 556 since the Leader Dynamics were few and far between. Maybe I should rethink that. |

I LOVE the STG44. I held a dewatted one (chamber welded) back when I was 16. It is the quintessential assault rifle (Hitler did name it the "Sturm Gewher" which means storm rifle, as i storm a position, so "assault." I would give my left nut to have a semi-auto version. Second place is an Armalite Ar180. I have owned two: One in 1985 which I sold in 1988, and one I bought during the year I lived in Mississippi (2010 to 2011. When we moved back to Kalifornistan, I had to sell it. It is a large FELONY to own one in CA, if you did not own and register it by 1990. |

I wonder what it would be worth now? Short GAU-2A video Guy I knew was in the 11th Armored Cav when George Patton's son had it. They installed some Mini-guns in M113 tracks, went out looking for trouble, and found it. I asked him, how'd that work out? He said it was fine for a few minutes, until they ran out of ammo. The armor version of finding yourself out of airspeed, altitude and ideas, essentially. He said they all looked at each other like, what do we do now? And right away somebody said, let's get the hell out of here. So they did. True story, supposedly. |

OFF TOPIC QUESTION: Do you think it would be possible to mod a H&K forty rounder to fit an AR magwell, to resemble the infamous ARVN AR/AK mag^^^? How do the dimensions compare with one another, if you wouldn't mind measuring? Thank you. |

Valkyries are available! M3A1 pistols and carbines. I am inputting the final line edits as we speak. Then it just needs formatting, which Olgunner has promised me is not an issue, and the aforementioned ISBNs and it will be OUT. Watch for a post from me in GD and Outdoors (fiction) sometime in the next two weeks. Still, it's a goal...

I hear you, Morgan. I think M1Sniper made one, but don't remember how his mag came out. As for the book, looking forward to picking up a copy, though I usually don't read fiction, gotta support a retro bro in arms. |

I actually had a convo with a British grunt, he hated the A1. He said there was alot of gas system issues with it that were fixed with the A2. Food for thought if you pick one up! Quoted:
Some many sweet rifles on my all time want list on here...but as much trouble as mine gave me i still pine after one of these: http://www.thespecialistsltd.com/files/Replica_L85A1.jpg Although i think this is an airsoft one to be honest and I posted a pic of the A1 on purpose although in hindsight i'd probably like an A2. Oh and while i'm at it i will take one of these thank you : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/Enfield_bullpup_prototype.jpg Also for some reason i love those Gwinns. I really hope to own them one day :( was talking to someone last year about buying their then the SO went into the hospital and the rest is history oh well. |

I have no first hand knowlege of the L85A1 other than what I have heard from former British Soldiers and Ex Military chaps, but I heard the A1 was such a huge POS it would literally fall apart during routine work/drills and even when breaking them down to clean, it was a huge nightmare and often time something on the system broke. Again, I have NO experiance with these weapons and what I've heard is mostly hear say but a few of the sources were extremely credible.

I did buy an old Norinco 120 round drum (AR15) once, to try and cut the tops off both an HK and the drum, to make a drum for the HK.. I never got around to it though because of the expense of an original HK mag (originals are steel, aftermarket are aluminum.) The bodies are very close in dimensions but the tops of the mags are quite different. I do have a Tig, and I have no doubt that it could be done, but I haven't done it. Oh, and yes, the 53 is just a shortened version of the 33. |

I did however have a major malfunction on a range with one back in the day.... Well not a malfunction and I've told the story here before but I pulled the cocking handle back and the entire back of the rifle came apart.. It basically field stripped itself out of the back of the rifle. And when I say came apart I mean the metal and plastic gave out and broke I don't mean it came apart at the seams or came apart like you would when you would take it down. And no I wasn't treating it roughly. But that was the only one I've had any problems with. One of my buddies in the paras still says the mag catch on them is prone to giving out but he likes the A2. |

This issue you had is one I heard from many other A1 operators and they actually said the rifles fell apart/broke during basic operations. This issues you ran into is not uncommon by any means as that was the horror story I heard about the most. Most guys said the A1 was trash and had to completely be redesigned. |
