| Just got your email James. It came off a standard 16" carbine barrel, so should work on any standard carbine gas length barrel. As I told you, I began backing the set screw out to disassemble it, then realized I could just knock the pins out and remove it. The set screw is a later version on the earlier, exposed version - which didn't hold settings as well from what I understand. There were some modifications to the bolt carrier's gas key as well from what I understand, but they are not visible. IIRC a tiny buffer was added. Can't wait to see the 703 progress... |

Thanks Morg I just went back through my emails and I had missed one from you explaining this :-( sorry |

Do you have to retrofit handguards to fit these Rhino systems? Looks like you would need to remove the top of a handgaurd cap and cut the top HG to fit over the piston tube portion. CRAP. I juste realized I forgot to send the handguards! |

That and the going grey is making me feel old! |

The Rhino Gas Piston System was developed and manufactured by Walt Langendorfer of Lansdown, Pa., around 1984-1985. And I got to talk to him about his system, because I was stationed aboard a ship a Portland Maine at the time and was going to send everything he needed directly from Bushmaster to him and back to Bushmaster, for me to pickup. At that tome it was right around $150 for the conversion. I thought it was supposed to fit a .625" Barrel, but you could have a latter model, as the early models had the gas adjustment screw poking out the front, and under spring tension. Well, that's all I know about the Rhino Gas Piston System. |

Thanks but i'm coming up with something fun for this :) Something like this maybe: http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m140/Aeneas2020/pistoncommando.jpg~original Quoted:

Aeneas2020, if you really want to do a retro rhino rifle I might be willing to swap my spare .625 fsb and rifle length op rod for the .750 fsb and carbine length rod Thanks but i'm coming up with something fun for this :) Something like this maybe: http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m140/Aeneas2020/pistoncommando.jpg~original Is that something you photoshopped together? Its cool! |

You don't have to cut the HGs I have or it - they were already modified, with a small 'grill' on the top. I will take a pic. ETA: Truthfully, I think you could get a little more innovative with the choice of muzzle device. THe SIG 510 FH is pretty cool - there are a number of 'experimental' looking devices out there. You also might want to consider a flip-up front sight base. It would mean modifying what I sent you, but hell, it's already been modified. |

Well there goes another $300 on my CC just ordered the upper, barrel and some other misc parts i "needed" lol! Still by sending me this you saved me from dropping 1k on a PWS shorty i was about to buy. Are the HGs triangular or round? doesn't bother me either way just curious. p.s. thinking they are round looking at the pics online :) |

You guys are going to be the death of me...ok so i guess it's time for me to send braceman an email (he's going to hate me i was a royal pain in his ass the last time. Build plan: Custom upper (built off of a standard stripped flat top upper) <- black finish A1 Port Door Round Forward assist (opinions?) Round HGs (The reason for this is because then i can keep the originals and won't have to try and butcher a set of triangle hgs to make this thing work). A2 black lower (because i already have one i'm in the middle of SBRing) 10.5 or 11.5 inch barrel .750 Flash hider???? thoughts i'm open to ideas. Part of me wants to throw a 609 style cone on the end lol. So really Option 2: obviously i'd have to do a cut out on the upper part for the gas piston system but i don't mind dremeling rounds HGs so much http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m140/Aeneas2020/options.jpg~original Option 3 should be a 607 stock.. |
| Walt Langendorfer (the inventor) did the installation on mine. It originally came with the Allen screw internal gas adjustment, but I started having problems with it on a 10.5" barrel. I sent it back, and Walt replaced it with the spring and screw external adjustment setup. Worked fine after that. I have no idea what the problem was. It could have been an imperfection in the modified FSB, don't know. All the ones I've seen are pretty rough looking. |
