Hi folks.  First post. Coming at ya from Pittsburgh, PA.  I was directed here by a member of the 1911addicts forum.

I was given this rifle yesterday...

http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w473/melter942/AR%2015s/Colt%20Sporter%20II/DSC08927_zps421c70d3.jpg

The serial number dates it to 1974 manufacture.  I was thinking it may be an A2 lower wearing an A1 upper, but that's not the case.  In googling for info, I found another thread on this site with an identical rifle, also of 1974 vintage.

It has an M16 BCG and I'd like to replace it with a vintage Sporter II carrier.  Here's the "C" marked BCG that's in it now:
http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w473/melter942/AR%2015s/Colt%20Sporter%20II/DSC08939_zps69e9f428.jpg

My goal would be to get this rifle back to it's original configuration and enjoy it for waht it is.  I think all I need is the complete FCG (I installed the factory parts from my 6920) and the BCG.  I'm not sure if the hammer/ trigger/ disconnector has changed since 1974, but I'm pretty certain the bolt carrier is not correct.

Any info or insight is certainly welcome and appreciated.

Thanks for your help...

The Sporter II line was mid 80s.

The 1974 serial range for SP1s are 5 digits SP32601, yours is a 6 digit.

Bolt carrier you are looking for is the shortened rail w/ exposed firing pin channel.  Fire control group should be C marked and a notched hammer.

It's the 6400 model from Colt and many people would consider the BCG you have in it an "upgrade" over the one that came in it as it was not modified like the original one was. The original one works fine but I wouldn't be concerned about putting back in the correct one.

Thanks for that.

Six digits vs five... these old eyes saw it after you shined the light on it!

I thought it came with the shortened carrier.  Not crazy about the exposed FP channel, forgot about that detail.  The FCG I put in it is C marked with notched hammer, good enough for the time being.

Now that you mention it, I'm sure you're right about the BCG being an upgrade.  A couple questions and a couple quick answers and you guys are setting my thinkin' straight.  I might keep my eyes open for vintage parts but leave it as is for shooting pleasure.

Thanks for the welcome... with the knowledge base already here, not much I can add, except maybe some pics now and then.

Purty clean lookin rifle. 'Leave it alone for now' is always a good starting point when starting your journey.

That's a very early A2 sporter. '85 more or less

Classic 6500 (not 6400).  Mine's 20,000 or so lower in serial, identical in external features except mine lacks even the forward assist, and has the SP1 dimension semi carrier.

Melter,

Welcome to the Forum!

My advice to you is to quit while you still have your sanity and wallet. Retro Black Rifle Disease(RBRD) is awful and there is no known cure.

That's a nice clean rifle and a great one to shoot and enjoy.

Where at in Pittsburgh in relation to Mineo's?

Often you can get people to swap a half moon Colt carrier for an M16 carrier, such as you have.  I'd keep the one you have now, but if you really want to go back to stock a WTT advertisement in the EE will likely get you there.

South Hills, Century III area.

Do I want the half moon or the shortened carrier?  Not really looking to trade, hoping to buy the right one and have both.

Right. Was thinking of the later rifles. Sorry about that.

Did the later Sporter II's have gray A2 uppers? I had one roughly 10 years ago with an A2 upper and big head FA, I don't remember the serial number but it was late 80's production came in a blue box. Traded it for a FAL to my uncle, we both still have our trade rifles.

OP, you may be in for more trouble than you can even imagine.

I started a few weeks ago with a trade for a Colt SP1.

Then I decided to by a Colt M16-A1 rifle kit and built a late Vietnam era clone.

Then I bought another kit (you never know how long they will be available, right?)

Now I am building a XM177-E2 clone.

If I wasn't broke, I'd buy another kit.

It's a very, very slippery slope.

You didn't just slip, m'friend - you got sucked right in past the event horizon of a black rifle hole...

Awsome gift.  Welcome to retroland / RBRD! Thanks for sharing.  Great first post.  My vote,  pick up the correct carrier when you get a chance or find a deal and keep / use the rest of the parts (bolt,  cam pin, FP,  retainer ).  Enjoy the shooting.

I understand a bit about what I'm in for.  I've spent the last 3 years on the 1911 slippery slope.  Got my first one, an SA TRP on July 1, 2011.  Here's what's in the safe today:

Two more USGI pistols incoming this week or next.
