So I'm doing a retro ish build and need to get a light weight barrel and a1 stock

The upper I have is a regular a1 with tear drop forward assist with shell deflector. Should I keep that or should I go with one without the forward assist and only the shell deflector or vise versa

Are you building a carbine or rifle?  For a true retro clone the C-7 upper isn't the preferred choice generally except for C-7 builds in retroland.  Really depends on what model you're actually trying to build.  If simply looking for something very functional build what you have.  LW barrels carbine or rifle using a rifle stock / rifle buffer are pretty hard to beat as long as you're not jumping in and out of vehicles with lots of gear.  I've found rifle stocks on carbines are a little less volatile,  remaining on target and aren't as hard on the internals.

At end of the day it's yours and others opinion matter little as you're the one who's going to be owning / shooting it and outside of retroland not many would know the differences or probably even care anyway.  Repeatedly hitting the center of the target usually is the most important part..  Check retroblackrifle site for pics and prts used in different models.  Also check Colt's rifle and the carbine carbine guide at top of page and even though you have a C-7 upper might want to look at A-2 thread for various models.  Give you lots of options.

With that said I prefer the slicksides SP-1 / 604 receiver or flat tops when building LW's that are gonna see the scales.  Most all will balance nicely with a LW barrel and rifle stock as long as you don't add 1/2 lb to the business end.

For M-16A-1 you would want a trap door stock and FA assist upper without shell deflector.  604 build or variant for slickside upper.  C-7 variant with upper you have.

So I need to find a upper with forward assist and ejector door without shell deflector. Any source that has them?

Equipment exchange might be the best bet, check often and
Be ready to pounce when you see one.

Nodak spud has them but they are probably back ordered  .
Try AR15sport. Com and maybe Fulton armory

OP,

If you want, I have a Colt A1 upper w/ old-style ejection port door and teardrop FA. I'll trade it straight up for your C7 upper. I'm a lefty and I need an upper with a brass deflector.

Either way, offer is on the table.

Use the one with shell deflector to build an IDF clone!  Then get a new upper for this build.

Problem solved AND two rifles!

I've never really been tagged using a 603 upper but I guess it depends on individuals cheekweld.   Notice most all of them that have seen any use have quite a few dings on the FA hump so it's kinda a deflector or has worked as one for me.

604's or earlier slicksides are a totally different story but probably still less than 20 times total in 5-6K rounds down the pipe through slicksides.  Doesn't really happen like talking about it or hasn't to me.  I wouldn't say it doesn't sting a bit but nothing to get real alarmed about unless as others have said it gets down the shirt or such.  I'd say picking up a pile or hot brass is more painful IMO but basically the same thing.  Nice WTT offer especially since this is retroland.  C-7 does make a nice build too,  especially if one has a CS stock.

I know Cheaper Than Dirt is on everyone's shit list after their price gouging during the big panic, but they have a full M16A1 kit for sale with a forward assist only upper for around $350.
