Hey guys, first off i wanna thank everyone on here for being awesome with helping out any questions and answers. I am definelty a rookie when it comes to building a gun or even modifying it. I just recently bought my first sp1 colt. I have a thing for these old colt guns, my dad is a vietnam vet, and i would love to build a xm177 for him. I have been researching as much as i can about this build but alot of the leads on here are older and some of guys are out business or the only way you can communicate with them is threw email. I am looking for someone to help guide me along on this build, let me know who you recommend to do the work on the upper and how to find the correct parts. My first purchase was a brick moderator and gernade ring. I also found a nice aluminium black stock. I have left several emails with adco about which barrel to get or exactly what i need to do my upper. The first thing i guess i want is a colt 603 upper. It is A1 model. The next thing i get lost on is which barrel do i get, i think i need the 11.5 thin barrel, but can you get a colt barrel that is 16 and cut it down? Not sure about the whole gas tube thing either. I really dont know what parts i need to assembly the barrel to the upper besides the barrel nut. I know i need a tear drop forward assist, 2 position buffer. I looked at a lower from nodak spud they are all gone, backorder.
So if any of you xm177 authorties could help this rookie out, and get me going on my build i sure appreciate your time. Any guys you recommand to do the work or even buy parts from. I really would like to honor this 101 airborn vet with something he can be pround of thanks!! |
No reason to SBR the XM177E2, it's probably one of the few carbines that have that SBR look without having to get the tax stamp for. The trick is to have a 14.5 barrel tapered down and have the threads a few inches down, the barrel will be visible at the end of the moderator but will look shorter by its placement along with the grenade ring. ![]() |

Also a rook but I know a little. Do you plan to sbr the rifle? If not you will have to have a barrel cut to 12.5 and the brick moderator pinned and welded to bring the overall barrel length to 16"
XM177e2s had an 11.5" barrel so if you go that route you must sbr the rifle, it looks to me like most go the 12.5 route. They also use a carbine gas system so same as most ARs on the market. |

Never heard of that, that's a great idea! Can anyone that does barrel work do something like that? |

| JT does excellent work..............http://retroarmsworks.com/ |
| John Thomas can probably take care of the upper, the lower is a full fence NoDak, I had the retro engravings done at Ident Marking Services. The DOD mark you see on the magwell, that was done with some stamps that are sold by another member. You best bet is to find someone like Braceman, another member on here who can replicate all the engravings on an 80% lower! you finish it and have it anodized. The aluminum two position stock is available from Essential Arms, No Dak should have the two position buffer tube, a seatbelt sling with some paracord for the sling and that waffle mag is also from No Dak. |
| Boywonder was working something for 12.5 inch barrels, which would be more cost effective and less arse pain than cutting down a real Colt barrel. I would go that route and have JT permanently install the Brick moderator. I dont know where he is I the process but I would like a 14.7 myself. |

Any barrel will work , A1 profile 20" or 16"
Can both be cut down. A A2 barrel or any heavier Type barrel will work also , it could be cut down and reprofiled ,, But this would be a extra expense. You have come to the right place , this is a great group here that will Guide you through the project . And don't feel bad about being a rookie.. I've been coming here every night for years and I still Don't know crap |

SandWMandP15Tee let me get this straight because I'm a little confused. Did you have your barrel machined down so that the barrel continues through Brick's Moderator up to almost the muzzle end of the flash hider? Because the way I'm picturing that is somewhat like an Airsoft gun with an inner barrel just stopping short of the end of the flash hider. If that's the case, how does that even work? The metal remaining at that point on the barrel must be pretty thin. Please post a pic if you can. Sorry for the thread jack btw OP I'm just trying to figure out as many options, tricks, tips, etc. for finishing up this XM177E2 I'm building also. |

I'm a stickler for details, I'm going the SBR route, I have everything that's need except the lower, on back order with NDS.
I regret selling the last XM177E2 I built because it took me a year to build it between collecting parts, the anodizing and engraving. Had I kept it, all I would have needed to do was have the barrel on the lower cut down, but it's always fun to do a new build. Well I can do the SBR now too because I don't live in CA any more. | Don't know why this didn't hit me before but I was just thinking about it and there's no way that it would look like an 11.5" barrel like that. No matter the configuration 16" - 4.5" is 12.5. The only thing you would gain over a pinned 12.5 is a little velocity. Not that it's a bad idea, it just seems like quite a bit of trouble over a cut and dried 12.5. |

Not trying to be a d*ck but doesn't 16 - 4.5 = 11.5?
I think the problem here might be that Brick's Moderator and grenade ring only equal about 4.3" or 4.4". I think the best solution would be to just have somebody cut the barrel down to the length that would equal 16" when adding the moderator - in other words I'll let them figure it out because I suck at math and then I have someone to blame |

By the time you put it together and pin it, you're going to be at less than 16". |
