I have been working on these for many years, and finally they are done....well at least done enough to play with!  There are some wrong parts here and there, mostly due to me being to cheap to pay for originals!  They are both short barrel rifles.  I will try to recall the build specs, but it has been long enough I may not remember it all.

Thanks to the forum and its members for the help over the years.

Brick

XM177E2, Army Model

Colt 603 upper with forward assist, Colt early 90's SP1 carbine barrel (pre "F" mark, but 1/7 twist which I like).  Got this of gunbroker for a song because someone made it post ban by cutting the bayo lug off and welded a muzzle brake to it.  bolt and carrier is Colt 16a1, fire control is DPMS.  The butt stock was a "b" marked commercial aluminum that I had powder coated.  Special markings by Ident Marking.  Lower by Nodak.  Moderator and grenade ring spacer by me.

XM177E2, Air Force Model

Cotl 604 upper, no forward assist.  Colt 6933 11.5" barrel (2000 era, "F" marked, 1/7 twist). Colt "N" marked plastic stock (figured I could fib this because of the Air Forces use it till it dies policy).  DPMS fire controls and Nodak Lower.   Moderator and grenade ring spacer by me.

No no no, you mis-read my friend!  YEARS and YEARS of collecting parts and getting things ready, just to spend 30 minutes assembling.  I must admit, I was lucky to pick up so many of the parts I needed when they weren't so "popular" and expensive.

Damn nice work brother! I know you've been working on these for some time. I'm just not sure which I like better - the 649 I think. Love slicksides as a rule. That reminds me I need to order a couple moderators from you - one to go to that museum in Poland. You do nice work.

Where did you get those markings? Love the white lettering.

I have posted twice in this thread who did the markings.

The white filling is from a lacquer stick obtained from Brownells.  Its like a wax crayon, you rub it in.

Thanks,

Brick

Super sweet.  Hope they perform great.  These look far better than the one's we did in the 90's with Hbars during the craze.  The bar has definately been raised.  Excellent attention to detail and personalization.  Love the serial number.

You have some really nice weapons there. I'm planning on making a XM177 style clone myself. I've heard you make the best clone NOS type flash suppressors. If I decide not to shell out the cash for the real one I'll be contacting you. Here are my plans for my clone. Let me know if you have any advise. I'm using a Colt M4A1 lower though.

COLT M16A2 COMMANDO UPPER AND 11.5"BBL

COLT M4 "FAT" DOUBLE INSULATED DUAL LINED CARBINE HANDGUARDS

COLT XM177E2 MODERATOR SUPPRESSOR GRENADE LAUNCHING WASHER

COLT "NOS" PROTO TYPE "X" SERIAL NUMBER XM177E2 MODERATOR

COLT M16A2 RIFLE FACTORY ACCESSORY PACK

COLT COLLAPSING CARBINE,COMMANDO AND SMG SHOULDER STOCK FOOT ASSY.
I'm getting most of my parts from Armament Services International, Inc. They carry all original Colt Parts.
Only downside of buying all original Colt parts is the extremely high prices...
Only Non-Colt product I'm using is a Lonestar Ordnance STOWAWAY 2 Pistol Grip.

Aside from using the wrong lower, wrong upper, wrong handguards, wrong stock for an xm177 clone ,you are pretty close.
I know, I sound like a dick...........but if you want a 177 clone you have to at least get close.   I don't know much about some of the newer models...........the one's that start with a 7, but I would think you are closer to one of those than a 600 series Colt.
edit........and wrong grip

edit again.........I am a dick.  After reading OlGunners post down below it made me realize that I was critical without offering constructive advice.  So, with that in mind, if you do want an xm177 clone/style carbine then you should opt for an A1 lower, although an A2 would work until said time that a "hard to find/get" A1 is available......the A2 gets a pass.
....you need an A1/603 upper receiver (one without the Brunton bump)
...handguards should be skinny version, specifically 6 hole)
...stock was vinyl acetate coated aluminum   (any aluminum would get a pass)
.....A1 grip
With all that said, you can certainly build it any way you want, but it wouldn't be an xm177 with the parts you have........which is OK......but it would be closer to a 727 ???

Mark, If you're seriously considering one of the original NOS E2 moderators from autoweapons, it deserves the best possible retro build you can manage, and many of us here would gladly provide some guidance.  We would LOVE to see the finished product!

If you'll repost this in a new post so we can give it some dedicated focus, I'm confident you'll get the advice you're seeking!

After further research I agree with your conclusion, The exact style I would end up with is a Colt 733 clone.

And there's cerainly nothing wrong with that.   A few guys in here have built some of the 700 series carbines. They probably allow the use of more common or available parts.  It's like when I was into hotrodding 40 years ago. We searched and built certain models, and others were passed on as not really being worthy of hotrodding............and as all the "worthy" ones were scarfed up, more and more other models were then considered acceptable.
