Hello, a friend of mine has this rifle and doesn't really know what it's worth. I asked if he would sell it and he said he might but he want's to find out what the current value is. He bought it many years ago and doesn't know if it was modified before he bought it. I have been trying to find out more but haven't had much luck so far.
The SN places it in the 1978 range if I'm not mistaken. SP85XXX

Is that a slip over muzzle device or has the barrel been cut (or replaced)
If its not an original barrel that hurts. Also is the stock original or is it fiberlite? (doesnt look original / shiny to me) Sidenote: Ive never seen an AR with an optic mounted so high....I think if you were aiming for a guys chest you'd hit him in the balls

I have no idea what i am doing.jpg |

Right click on the picture and open in a new tab and you can see the rifle better.
Still kinda hard to tell on the stock but I'm leaning toward correct with bad lighting. Looks like the barrel may be cut. The abomination on the end does not appear to be slipoverish. Too skinny. With a Brick moderator and a trip to JT or ADCO she'll be a purty pea shooter! |

I will have to see if I can get some better pic's. I won't be back out to his place for a while though. I didn't have long with the rifle but I seem to remember the flash hider was not slipped over the barrel. It struck me as odd that it was such a long FH.
The optic is a Weaver. You can see the name on this higher res pic. SP1 |

Is it just me or does that scope mount look like it was modified to fit a delta ring instead of a slip ring? In higher resolution the stock looks original to me. Agree on the move to a Brick moderator... would be sweet! Yeppers! I see the grindage in the hi res picture. |

shanej - Looking at that, I think it may have started its life as a rifle. The delta ring seems wrong, which meant the barrel was probably replaced or at least removed at one time. Usually on the carbines you can see pretty obvious factory staking marks at the receiver end plate that are covered with black paint. It appears they are lacking, but it may be the picture. I don't remember what year the carbines started, but just a quick glance at the data base shows that serial number is right in the area of the initial carbines. It may be too early to have come from the factory in any other form than a rifle.
All that doesn't mean much, unless you are concerned about having an original, or plan to sell it as an original. |
| Added a link to some additional pics to the first post. The flash hider is definitely not a slip on. It looks to be pinned but to my eyes it doesn't look to be welded. I don't have a lot of experience with pin and weld jobs so I don't know for sure. I couldn't find any markings at all on the barrel. Bolt is marked MPC and the carrier is marked C |
