I'm close to having all the parts for building a Model 601 clone.  Is the early barrel marked with the "12" an acceptable configuration for the Model 601?  If not, what barrel is acceptable when building a Model 601 clone?  Are Model 601 barrels ever available?

601s had mostly 1:14 barrels with the ones at the end of production running 1:12.  those 1:12 barrels weren't widely produced and are probably harder to find than a 1:14.

they rarely come up and bring a lot of coins when they do.  heck finding even the cast FSB has proven to be a challenge to many folks here.

more info on barrel and markings here:

601 barrels are always "available"...depending on your available discretionary income!
But I've actually seen more 1-14 barrels than very early 1-12's.  Ekie's guide shows late 601 barrels marked 1-12 under the FSB and 12 over the chamber.  I've never seen either of those in person.  I've seen VP barrels with the 12 near the muzzle, but am not sure if they were ever found on a 601 or only on the 602.

Nice thing about building a "later" 601 clone is you can use the Type B stock (usually a little bit cheaper than Type A's) and a many circles mag button instead of the hard to find horizontal line version.

I'm sure we'd all enjoy seeing what you're putting together.  You don't have to wait till the rifle is finished!

is there a correlation btw type A and horizontal mag buttons?  i thought that the horizontal ones were only very early so couldn't you have a type A w/ many circles mag button?

No real correlation that I'm aware of.
Unfortunately, there are so few original Model 01's around these days that it's hard to get any firm cut-off points, but from the best info I gathered when I was shopping for the real deal, the mag button change came first--fairly early in the production run.  The stock change came later--somewhere in the mid-run.  And the barrel twist change came quite late in the run.
