We also traded for an old Colt M16. It is missing the charging handle, flash hider and washer.
This Rifle is serial # 9,04x,xxx.  The original form 5 has an approval date of 7/76
The barrel is stamped – C MP CHROME BORE,
So my question is, would the correct flash hider be a bird cage, with a split washer?
When did they stop using the 3 prong?
I can’t find any info on the charging handle, other than the one on the pre ’64 Armalite rifles. So, are they all the same?

correct flash hider would be the a1 birdcage.  by the time the trapdoor stocks came around, the a1 birdcages were in use.

split.  they went to peel washers and then crush washers with the A2s.  i've never seen anything but a split on an A1.

Yes same charging handle as used today.  Just you need a gray one unless black is OK.

That upper and that lower did NOT leave the factory together.Surprised no one mentioned this. Lower is marked M16,the upper has the forward assist. The lower is a model 604 lower.
Forward assist models will be marked either XM16E1,or, M16A1.

Looks more like an "export" model M16A1 (sans Prop. Of US Govt. rollmarks).

we got an AR15 M614, with a slick side upper from the same place, is it possible the uppers got switched?  should the M614 have a forward assist upper? I read somewhere the 604 was produced for the USAF without a forward assist???
those pics are posted too
