Wasting threads is like just throwing good electrons away for nothing.
How bout this. A nice AR10 Transitional with factory wooden HG's, all laid out. Notice the broken bolt and the vise rash on the barrel.

The early Dutch AR10's has small bolt lugs and after a few thousand rounds it is not unusual for a bolt to fail. Later, the Portuguese contract AR10's has much larger bolt lugs and the bolts seem to go forever. These earlier rifles are much lighter than the later Porto's and the price one pays for light weight is a little less durability. Just imagine - A Sudanese AR10 weighs less than a Colt sp1. The Transitional rifle shown in the photo is not quite as light as a Sudan.
I believe that someone tried to replace the barrel extension with one having larger lugs so that the large (Porto) bolt could be used. |

(Don't look now but it looks like those AR10 guys have hi-jacked another thread.)
Cool Japanese AR10 site |
| I had thought that the bolt failure could be a hydrogen embrittlement problem I hadn't considered it being used as a tool to remove the extension actually I think the bolt broke first and they tried to replace the extension after but the problem with that is the is the Sudanese and Protuguese extensions are very different dimensionally both internally and externally. Embrittlement usually occurs if the hard chromed part is not cooked to release hydrogen created and embedded in the part as a result of plating. Interestingly the original bolts has the thinnest lugs and after early failures the lugs went to the extreme size in the Port design and filnally were a sized in between on the SR25 which the current bolts (DMPS-AR10) are patterned after. |

Little did I know when I double posted and deleted it, that it would start this. Next time I want to start a multiple page thread, I guess I'll post...nothing. |

Little did I know when I double posted and deleted it, that it would start this... I think you can go back to the first post and change ["edit"] the title...From 'delete this' to AR10 bolt faces or something...I do that quite frequently on Lugerforum.com... I just object to wasting a perfectly good thread...It can't be deleted, but even if in error, you can always find something to fill it out... If you'd really wanted to delete this, you'd have gone up to the moderator's yellow triangle and had Ainless or coctailer delete it... |
| After further study I think the Sudanese bolt lug problem is related to cutting of the lug isides parallel and if you look inbetween the lugs you can see how the cutter actually went below the outer circumference of the bolt itself. The next two revisions are thicker at the bottom and thinner at the top. I'm amazed mine has lasted as long as it has I have definitely not been nice to it. |

How many times can a thread be jacked? Here are some broken bolt photos. http://oi43.tinypic.com/o9ejo1.jpg http://oi42.tinypic.com/2ijt72u.jpg In my 44 years of military/owning/building/shooting M16's/AR-15's, I have only seen one broken bolt...And that was because a dummy tried to unscrew the barrel extension using the bolt and a Phillips screwdriver through the bolt cam pin hole... |
| The outer diameter of a legacy AR10 barrel extension is .015" larger than the current DMPS/AR10 verison. Whats the best method to shim or plate a current extension to the legacy diameter, I have been using 2 segments of .007 feeler guage wrapped around the outside but its a bitch to pull apart or put together. Who has a painfully obvious solution to even the most casual observer? |

Who has a painfully obvious solution to even the most casual observer? use an engine lathe and four jaw chuck, indicate the extension in, turn a few thousandths (0.010" to 0.015" or so) off the O.D. being careful not to make the wall too thin, I wouldn't turn down the full length either make a bushing, with approximately 0.001" to 0.0015" smaller I.D. than the turned down extension O.D. make bushing O.D. larger than needed for receiver, I would want a minimum of 0.125" wall thickness on the bushing be sure to chamfer the bushing I.D. where it meets the shoulder left on the extension place barrel in freezer overnight, heat bushing in oven for around half an hour or so at about 450 degrees, be careful and press bushing onto extension let temps normalize, then turn bushing O.D. to needed size |

I'm still recuperating from a major heart attack I suffered on June 26th. It's Hell getting old but the alternative is a lot worse. |

Lets get back off topic.
Many Dutch AR10 owners whine continually about there being zero grenade sights available. I am no different and have been bothering a couple of Dutchmen for quite some time. I know of only one other mortal (not Knight) collector who admitted to having a grenade sight and it turns out he bought it from the estate of a collector who travelled to Holland to get it. So last month a Dutchman emails me and asked if I want a Porto grenade sight. I said YES. Dumb me, then price negotiations started and I was at a great disadvantage. We agreed on a price. Then he admits to having another NOS sight and asks me how much I would pay. I gave him a now very inflated number and he said yes. But he would not tolerate greed and he would only sell me one. I took the NOS sight and within a day he sold the other to some guy wearing wooden shoes over there. [I can only admit this because only Americans are stubborn enough to read a thread that says DELETE in its title]. Here is my NOS sight.
And here is the first page of the AR-10'er edition describing the visit of an American collector to Holland. I met the guy that bought Tony's AR10 junk from his widow and it came with all the goodies, including the uber-rare Sudan BFA mentioned in the article.
