So I was looking at my wanna be 651 and it currently has a 727 upper instead of the proper upper and I plan on eventually correcting that. (I need A NDS upper and lower and an a1 pistol grip)

And i don't want a nice 727 upper to be sitting around for too long and I know some of the 727's supposedly had the pencil barrels or the 723 had the 727 uppers something like that.  Also the new colt 6720's don't have f marked front sight posts.  So I was wondering if ai replaced the flat top with my 727 upper would that make an acceptable 727 clone?

Also debating on what stock to use car-15 or m4

The 723 was built with either the pencil barrel (upper receiver has NO brass deflector) or with an A2 profile barrel and M203 cut (upper receiver has brass deflector). Both versions had round FA. The 727 uses the A2 upper receiver with an A2 profile barrel and M203 cut.

This is a 727 I recently built. The lower receiver is currently a DPMS model and is getting replaced by a Nodak Spud NDS-16A1 lower I have on order. I also have another Nodak Spud NDS-16A1 lower on order for a 723 build. The 723 will have the pencil barrel.

As far as swapping receivers to make a 727, you would still have to source an A2 barrel with M203 cut. I used a DD 14.5" bbl with a pinned and soldered extended A2 FH. As far as a stock, the 727 used a Fiberlite stock with a 2-pos. buffer tube. You will also need the 6-hole carbine handguards.

I saved a pic of an ~727 with a skinny barrel from a pic thread somewhere but I don't know how to get it here without uploading it myself.   It was a pic from the guy with the ugly blue couch.

727's had the first production barrel profile that looks like an M4, with the M203 forward bracket step.  They also had feed ramps.

The coolest 727's are the free-floated, suppressed, highly modified versions used by some guys in JSOC, with 12" VMATCH free-float tubes and FSB pocket cuts, using Weaver rail sections drilled and tapped to be able to mount the PAQ-4A and C, Surefire weapon lights, and an improvised vertical fore grip attached at the 6 o'clock with aviation push buttons and internal wiring that operated the PAQ-4 via the cable port on the back of the PAQ-4.

With the suppressor partially concealed by the 12" rifle-length float tube, they looked somewhat like an MP5SD.  Add a Lone Star Stow Away grip, Aimpoint 5000, ARMS mount, Delta Cheek Piece, sharktooth rubber butt pad with zip tie, and a nice Bow-flage paint scheme, and it was a pretty cool configuration.  No pics of this particular set-up have been posted that I've seen, but there are some of the 727's with the front sight pocket cut and different rifle-length float tubes.

Here's an example of the Armalite carbon fiber OD Green float tube with custom threaded inserts for user-tailorable rail section placement, FSB pocket cut, Lone Star Grip, old Fiberlite stock, and some other things.

My 727 clone will eventually have the rifle-length float tube with FSB pocket cut once I find a VMATCH version somewhere.  I'm still stuck at this stage:

When I get done, you'll see what I mean about how unique the particular carbine I'm duplicating was when I saw it.  It was used by one of the Delta Snipers who was on the same SO Team as one of the guys who went down on Super 61.  They had this awesome Team photo with guys holding all kinds of unique weapons that had been tailored to their personal specifications.  At least one of them had an SR25, while the others had 727's with Aimpoint 5000's.

Another unit who used the 727 a lot in the late 1980's, early 1990's was the NAVSPECWAR community.  They did a lot of break contact drills with 727's on AUTO, hence one of the reasons why feed ramps were important.  The break contact battle drill is pretty universal among reconnaissance units and the SOF community, so the need for feed ramps seemed to answer demand across the services.

Note the use of an M60 sling, the manner of sling attachment, sleeve pockets on 6-color Desert Camo Uniform, Grenadier's vest with modifications (webbing sewn over harness area to attach assault pack to in the rear), 2 QT canteen and M16 30rd LC-1 mag pouch on black equipment belt.  Also note the incorrect but common nomenclature cited in the book as "CAR-15/M203".
