I have been slowly gathering parts for a XM177 build am I'm down to two parts one being the FH/Moderator I haven't had much luck finding. Who repops them these days?

One like this.

I believe the boardmember Brick is the man to talk to about these.

Last time I check with Brick he stated that it wouldn't be back in production until May but it's still early.

How would I find Brick? I don't think i can search just for a members name.

EDIT: scratch that I found him through the archives.

I am just starting the same journey and know next to nothing other than I really want one.

Any chance you could send me a PM with tips on where to look for parts? I am reading the tacked threads, etc, but more info is always a good thing. Thanks, and good luck. Cant wait to see pics.

There isn't really any tips I can give ya. I've done a lot of reading here as theres a wealth of retro knowledge in this forum. I  have two builds going one being this one and the other a XM16E1 so it's been a long process As for parts so far it's all been acquired mostly through the EE but I've also found parts on Gunbroker and at gun shows. My only recommendation would be to get on the list at NoDak Spud http://www.nodakspud.com/ for a lower.

Brick isn't the only one doing them.  45Bravo does them too.  As to which is better... It depends what is more important for you, absolutely correct appearance, or performance.  From what I have read, Brick's moderators are dimensionally nearly exact duplicates of the original Colt moderators, whereas 45Bravo's are modified Bushmaster ones, and are slightly off dimensionally (though nobody but an expert would probably be able to spot the difference).  So, if you are a purist, striving for an OCD, correct-right-down-to-the-markings repro, Brick's is probably what you want.  HOWEVER...

The problem with Brick's moderators, and the reason I didn't get one, is that they are just hollow tubes, with none of the original Colt moderator's sound and flash suppressing ability (or they'd be NFA items), and they permanently attach to an 11.5 inch barrel to get the length up over 16 inches, so you don't have to register it as a short barreled rifle.  But what you are getting, performance-wise, is the worst of both worlds: you get all the disadvantages of a SBR -- reduced velocity and terminal effectiveness, more blast and muzzle flash, etc. -- without actually having the short length and handiness of the SBR in return for giving up that bit of performance.  And of course, unlike the real Colt moderators, you don't even get the blast and flash suppressing characteristics either.

45Bravo's moderator, on the other hand, is a "slipover" type.  The threads are closer to the muzzle end, and it attaches to your 16 inch skinny barrel, so you at least have a bit more velocity -- the same as any carbine-length AR -- and the slightly improved terminal effectiveness that gets you.  The difference is not huge, and probably immaterial for most civilian shooters , but for myself, I saw no reason to give up any amount of performance, even a small one, when all I'd get in return for the sacrifice is appearance, especially when the difference in appearance is slight, and something the vast majority of people would never notice.

But absolutely correct appearance may be more important to you if all you intend the gun for is a range toy.  Get what you like better.

Abe I understand all that,This when finished won't so much be a range piece but more of a general plinker.  I'm not a purist by no means but the slip over 45bravo makes I can't use due to my barrel is 11.5.

Stay clear of 45 bravo, there are extensive threads about him here.
Nice guy, great work, but  it will take you forever to get you're parts. If you get them.
I have been waiting I've a year and a half for a 607 moderator !
Give braceman a shout, he can make whatever you want, however you want it

Wow. That is quite the wait. I got my XM moderated barrel back from 45B during the big finale he did a while back. (My total was like 26 months). Like you say, nice guy, great work, but I am not sure what caused the wait times.

45Bravo is a full time LEO, and got in over his head with accepting too much work. I know he felt terrible about how things went down, but he didn't intend it to turn into a full-time venture. The fun goes out of something quick when you are working every night after work to fill orders. AFAIK he is no longer in business, and doesn't want to be. John Thomas is a good option, and there are a few other members here who might do a one off if you know them well.

If I remember correctly you need to have your barrel at 12.75" to be legal with the Brick Moderator. That's what I remember he posted for those of us who have one of his

I think he was reserves to maybe ? He did a great job on my xm upper package
Only took three months, but after that he vanished . I just wish he would have made my
Pair of moderators before he closed shop. Oh well, I've moved on
And braceman made them

Contact "braceman".  He might be able to make a XM style moderator for you.  You might ask him about the grenade ring as well.

Here's a picture of the faux 607 moderator he made for me.  It's pictured by my "brick" XM moderator.

Very nice I didn't think about Braceman. I sent a IM to brick but he has only read the IM and hasn't responded.

Here is a drawing I made to help guys understand the lengths involved.

Hm thats not good. Everything I read was to use a 11.5 barrel.

My original XM177 moderator is made to original dimensions.  The XM177E2 barrels were 11.5", but together with the moderator were not over 16"....but that didn't matter to the military because they don't have to follow the laws like we do.  That is why guys buy a longer barrel and cut it down long enough to get to 16" with the moderator.  The good news for you is (if you bought an 11.5" barrel) is that my next batch will include a new model XM177 style moderator for guys with 11.5" barrels.  It will be long enough to get your barrel to 16".

I sent a IM to brick but he has only read the IM and hasn't responded.

Sorry, I might get a minute to look, but not always have time to respond right away.

I had to get a 607 moderator made for an 11.5" barrel a friend set me to test. My problem is I needed the moderator to be long enough to make the overall length 16" with the pin and welded moderator -- I didn't have the SBR stamp. I went with 45Bravo but it was back when Hurricane Katrina went through and 45Bravo had to do major long time police work. Needless to say it took a bit of time for him to complete the moderator but I got it back pinned and welded and he even matched the front sight color to the moderator.
