What color should the exposed portion of the metal a M16A1 receiver extension/buffer tube be for a 604 clone?  The one APEX is selling for $45 looks to be dark gray park.

Well, it's anodized,  but grey would be correct for most builds unless your receivers are black (late '70s stuff)

Think it's been answered but for most all the 604's I've seen it really should be the grey on the exposed/visible ring or same color as the tube.  The later 70's Colt's or specifically the one's from Apex that I have received were grey tube and black on the visible ring so not what I'd really call 604 correct but they are Colt and Colt is correct,  right!  They did mfg 604's through the 70's and possibly still use these in certain instances so the later mfg tubes could easily be installed.  Most I've seen were earlier production IMO and have also seen re-arsenal builds that were the earlier tubes but had been dipped or say re-colored black with grey underneath.  Hope this helps.

Ya, aluminum they were/are.

I've seen some GM Hydramatic M16A1 tubes that turned gold like some of their receivers, and started out deep gray or black. But those were 603's, not 604's.

For a Colt 604 M16, you should look into a gray one, should be similar to original receiver finishes.
