I bought this when I bought my 1982 SP1 years ago.

Since I didn't use it on the SP1 what is it for?  I have Googled and found zippo results for this type of sling attachement.

Its a quick disconnect. I have a few of them, we also used them in ROTC rifle matches for the slings while standing.

yep common with a sling stud.  

here's a pic of the swivel and a stud that's used with ar15 handguards:

Looks like a typical sling swivel, it will work on any standard swivel stud. Wouldn't work on the SP1 anyways, no swivel stud, or need for one for that matter.

that swivel would work on a late fixed stock SP1, if you replaced the existing rear swivel with one of these

So you have to have the stud as well.
Looked on my new 6940 and didn't see any attachment points.
