Call me stupid but I dont get it from reading other posts and websites that sell barrels,  What do they mean by a mid-length? I want to change my (16 inch garbage barrel) carbine. It has a standard feed ramp that I want to swap out for a  Daniel Defense  m4 feed ramp barrel and I understand that I need to change the bolt carrier because of the lugs. Also is there anything on the upper that needs to be change other than the bolt carrier?

There are different types of gas systems for the AR15:

I believe you can use a standard upper receiver with a M4 barrel trunnion (with M4 feed ramps), but not a M4 upper receiver with a standard barrel trunnion (lots of fun huh?)
I don't see why you would have to change the bolt carrier?

I was told that the lugs are differant. Because the m4 is cut deeper than a standard.  Thank you for the reply about mid-length, I now understand the mid-length barrels have a longer gas tube so the block will be farther down the barrel.

Whatever bolt and carrier you're currently using will be fine with M4 ramps.  But I'm curious––are you switching to a barrel with M4 ramps because you need a new barrel and that's all that's available...or do you expect the M4 ramps to be an improvement of some kind?
If you're swapping out just the barrel, you're not going to get any benefit from the M4 ramps because your upper receiver is not also ramped.  If you think you need "enhanced feeding" or whatever the M4 ramps promise, you should replace both the barrel and receiver.

I'm not sure if you're actually trying to do something "retro" with that change, but welcome to the retro forum regardless.  Stick around long enough and we'll have you swapping your new-fangled M4 barrel ramps for something with an un-chromed chamber!

I didnt want to here that! Cost of rebuild is cutting into my beer and hooker money. The barrel change is due to accuracy, cant hit the side of a planet with it. Also had some feed problems that keep me from shooting other brands of ammo. Hopeing to upgrade. I guess it probly will be for the best to get a new upper/barrel package and just slap it on and be done with it.

I wonder if your feed issues are due to having M4 ramps in the receiver but not in your cheap barrel (see above pic.)  Even if your current reciever does not have M4 ramps, it will work fine with a barrel extension that DOES. (See above pic.) There is NO reason to replace the bolt carrier or bolt. They are all the same, lug-wise.
