In 1972 did the Colt SP1 come with a trap door stock . What year was the transition from butt plates to trap door? also in 1972 were the barrels marked CMP chrome bore?
I got one thats serial # SP 2223x with Trap door and cmp chrome bore. I got a thing for triple digits . So I snaged it up. very nice example of an SP1

Yes to the trapdoor buttstock. My SP1, serial number 20,6XX, has a C MP C marked barrel.

The SP1 never came with a forward assist?

Does your serial # read SP1222xx or SP 222xx? The number 1 is part of the serial #, if there is a 1 present, not the model #. It's a common mistake.

SP1222xx should have a trapdoor stock & a C MP CHROME BORE marked barrel according to the SP1 data base

SP222xx would likely have a C MP C or C MP B marked barrel, to early for C MP CHROME BORE marked barrel.

ETA: After your edit of how the serial # is marked, it sounds like a replacement barrel to the original one.

Nope.  The Army was the only customer that thought they needed one!

Does your upper have forge codes under the rear sight, or is it blank & have proof marks (square with C in it & triangle with VP in it) above & forward of the port door? Wondering if the upper may have been switched out somewhere along the line?

Regarding the SP1 serial number chart on the Retro Black Rifle website- are the numbers the beginning or end of the year's production?

It is the beginning of the production year, i.e 1965 began with 2501 and went to 5599.

Some early '72 SP 1's came with the non-trap door stocks.

Can you post some pics? I think the guys pretty much dialed it in for you, I just want to see your sub-$1k SP1.
