Just picked up a '64 vintage (SP 018XX) Colt SP1. Pretty nice shape, previous owner must not have known what a cleaning kit was for though.

For the SP1 database: It has a parked carrier & machined firing pin retainer, carrier auto sear trip cut back, chrome bolt w/ no MP marking, barrel has an upside down marked M & proof & 12, + on lower, full auto flat headed firing pin, edgewater buffer, pinned buffer tube, two stakes on carrier key bolts, three prong hider, coated sling swivels. No drain hole in the buttstock screw, no forge codes or proof marks on the upper receiver, early Armalite type ejection port door and also has the hole in the selector switch. FSB appears to be forged w/o drain hole. I haven't had the handguards off yet to see if it has the early carbon steel gas tube and no drain hole handguards though. No sear block, large pivot hole.

015XX Colt sling with no "buckle", parked carrier & machined firing pin retainer, carrier auto sear trip cut back, round carrier key, no firing pin catch on hammer, bolt marked MP, barrel marked M & proof & 12, + on lower, full auto flat headed firing pin, edgewater buffer, two stakes on carrier key bolts

01457 no details, made in 1964

014xx M and proof marked barrel, plastic coated swivels, chrome MP marked bolt, parked carrier, auto firing pin, machined firing retainer, green buffer tube, no hole in buttstock screw

01348 Barrel marked "M" with "VP" Triangle proof upside-down next to M between spars of front sight.  "+" under ejection port cover.  No marking on parked bolt carrier, "M" electro-penciled on Nickel/crome bolt.  Hammer has "E" inside of "C" inside of circle on left side

01042 cast FSB, barrel marked M and proof early 64, and early port door, parked bolt carrier with auto trip cut back, hole in selector, edgewater buffer, round carrier key, + on lower, plastic coated swivel, long disconnector, no firing pin catch on hammer

003xx hole in take down pin. Looks like machined FSB?

00231 has old port door, transitional bolt stop & cast FSB? (this one has some miss matched parts)

00159 no details

00005 full chrome M16 bolt group, modern bolt stop, holes in selector

SN 48xx

Edgewater buffer, parked slickside semi carrier (no shiite) , chrome MP bolt, MV 12 marked barrel 3 prong fh, smooth fsb w/o drain hole), non-drilled stock screw, early gastube (maybe stainless, magnet won't stick), black handguards w/o drain holes,

No monkey business here. Even the buffer tube has the original roll pin holding it on!

Check out that sling. It is as it was.

I'll soon have an SP1. Bought it on GunBroker. Should have it next week, or the week after. I'll edit this post with the info when I get it.

Here's the info on my SP1. Picked it up last week, but with the holiday rush didn't have time to go over it. The seller told me it was a local PD trade in. Loal PD didn't clean their weapons very well.

Colt AR-15 Model SP1 Ser. SP 178XXX

Slickside upper marked "C M".

Barrel marked  "C MP CHROME BORE", A1 FH, no markings on the FSB.

"C" AR15 bolt carrier with FA notches, no markings on the bolt.

I just bought a police trade in Colt SP1 in exc condition. The serial number range is 108XX. I am not certain if it has had components swapped out or if it is in original unmolested condition. The features are as follows.

Serial #108XX

The Barrel is marked "MP" between the front site posts and "C" behind the three prong flash hider. The chamber appears to be chrome plated.

The bolt is grey/black finished with an "MP" marking behind the locking lugs.

The AR-15 bolt carrier is grey/black finished and has forward assist notches. The carrier does not appear to have any markings. The screws on the gas key have two "round" shaped stakes.

The firing pin is the modified light flat head type

The buttstock is the non-trap door type with drain hole screw. The rear sling swivel is plastic coated.

Edgewater buffer with non-pinned tube

The lower has raised "+" near pivot area. The pins and selector are the non-dimpled type.

The hammer has a 2 inside a circle marking.

The front sling swivel is plastic coated and is connected to the FSB by a roll pin.

The sling is green cotton canvas with parkerized slide keeper and black buckle

The upper receiver is the non forward assist type. A small faint triangle is visible forward of the ejection port. The ejection port cover has the rectangular detent.

I was just looking at my 601 clone and I was thinking...

My upper that I'm using is an SP1 large hole but it has no proof marks forward of the ejection port and no forge codes below the rear sight. The "arrow and R" marking is also the "fat" type that is shown below and the 3 on the adjustment wheel isnt "angled" and is "rounded". Any idea about it? Estimate on year? Maybe 1976 or earlier?

Colt AR-15 Model SP1 Ser. SP 177XXX
Slickside upper marked "C M".
Barrel marked "C MP CHROME BORE", A1 FH, C and Bell marked FSB, with tapered delta ring.
"C" AR15 bolt carrier with FA notches, MP marked bolt.

Slab side lower, large hole screw type front takedown pin with no spring or detent.  R 11 mark on right side.  Trapdoor buttstock.  Hammer has circle C with circle 7.

It had rifle handguards on it that I swapped out to triangular.

Have some questions though.

Did these ship with the A1 FH or 3 prong?
Was the delta ring the flat style or the tapered style?
Were the HGs triangular or rifle?
Did the stock leave the factory with a trapdoor?

Not sure what was changed or updated, I think it's still in factory config except for the HGs, I think the triangular fits it's personality a lot better.

I have the chance to buy a Colt SP1 for a reasonable amount. I am kinda leery of the buy though because it appears to have a Full Auto style bolt. Nothing else is FA. Is a FA bolt in an AR an issue?

No, it's completely legal as long as there are no FA lower parts. Buy it!

I just bought SP1 #58x.  I also have pics of #13X and these 2 rifles are identical to the smallest detail so it is probable that they are from the same production run and possibly/probably assembled the same day.

'M' marked 14 twist bbl

Cast FSB

Early non-stainless gas tube

Chrome MP Bolt

Larger headed FP but not the 601 version

Parked machined FP retainer

Parked earliest pattern semi carrier

Key bolts with single centerpunch stakes

Parked key

Transitional bolt catch

Modified M16 trigger parts

Edgewater buffer

The following are center drilled:

Windage screw

Safety

Takedown pin

------------------------------------------

Too bad we can't come up with production dates

It would also be interesting to come up with a serial number span where they started changing to the VP 12 twist bbls.

CAN THIS POST BE MOVED TO THE RETRO FORUM?

I have 000694 - there's a post around here somewhere showing all the various parts, but I can't find it.  Search needs a lot of work.

Here's one picture; I can post more if the other thread is gone.  Note the hole in the selector and take-down pin, as well as the early-style transitional bolt catch.  Selector had a hole on the right side, too, as did the takedown pin. This gun had the Edgewater buffer, milled sight, chrome bolt with diagonal cuts behind the lugs, marked "M" and "P" but no "C" - park'd AR-15 (not M16) carrier, carrier key screws had one square stake apiece.

There's a sideways "M" on the right side of the barrel between the two rings of the FSB, and there's what looks like a "W" (upside-down in picture, hard to make out) on the lower right, up near the muzzle. [ETA: Upon closer examination, this is probably marked M1.]

I just put money down on a SP1 rifle, condition appears to be excellent overall, although the rifle was fired...and then put in a closet for 20+ years.

Details:

Serial: SP1792xx (83-85?)
Buttstock has a trap, and fixed swivel.
A1 flash hider
Carrier has the FA notches

Came with a cleaning kit, and probably the original sling (metal keepers). No mag, the gunshop will toss one in, though.

Price was $899, which seems quite reasonable given the superb condition. These are very rare in my area, and the last one I saw was well over 900 and it was in nowhere near as good condition. The last SP1 this particular shop had was $1200, and was a police trade in that they got from some distributor.

Hello all. This is my first post. I have  a Colt AR15 SP1 the serial number is SP1749##. Can anyone tell me what year it was likely manufactured and anything else about it and what to look for as far as markings to tell if it is original. I will try and list any markings that I see on it. It has a stamped "C" and "M" under the rear site adjustment wheel. On the top of barrell near flash suppressor is stamped " C MP  Chrome Bore". If anybody knows a realistic value as well. I bought it back in 1990 or 1991. I have been told it is worth over 2K but I am not sure. Thanks again. Pete

Yours is only 4000 or so away from mine, so it dates from 83-85 just like mine.

As for worth..well...$900-1200, depending on accessories and condition, and how bad someone wants a genuine SP1.

It likely was worth 2k during the ban, since SP1 receivers were like gold since they were guaranteed preban, but since the expiration, values have gone down back to normal ranges.

It still has great value in the states that enacted their own bans that duplicated the 94 ban criteria, since there is no question that it is a preban receiver.

I have SP1 441xx, 20", slick side, triangular, old school cool.
It is the first AR I bought & love it!

But just curious, what makes the SP1 desirable?

The appearance, the history, the low weight, and the simplicity compared to currently offered rifles.

And for a Colt, they can be had "cheap" now that the high-speed rifles are being offered for sale with all the evil features intact. You can still build a clone cheaper with a NDS lower and a A1 upper, but that Colt Pony still adds mystique.

Also, it's a guaranteed "preban" gun to those in AW states, which can get you a nice premium.

Just got this SP1, WARNING  its grimy, I took these photos as I was starting to clean it up, was in the rough for sure, and My camera shows more detail than I can see with the eye..

Details
Serial # SP 12214X
no marking on front site except "up" on post
Barrel marked "C MP Chrome Bore"  The M and P are like one letter squished.
Bolt carrier marked "C" and has forward assist notches
Bolt marked "MPC" again M and P squished and this whole marking is very light
Hammer marked with a circled "C"
Upper marked "CM" under sight adjustment and a funny looking cockeyed square with something unreadable in it in front of the trap door on the base of the handle

I was told it had a 3 prong FH on it originally but now had an A1

Can some one date this and tell me whats not original? I'm very new to old Colts, I just bought this because I thought it was very close to original, seems to be all colt but some things don't make sense to me  such as Forward Assist notches on a BC thats in a rifle thats got no Forward Assist.  I assumed thats not original but still Colt.

Photos, click for big ones..

Sorry about all the photos just thought it would clearly define things.

It's very sedate. :)

With regards to the foward assist bolt notches on the bolt carriers of SP1's, this is usually the rule, rather than the exception (which would be early SP1's).
