I bought a few of the military re-pack A1 buttstocks from Charlies a while back and tucked them away. Tried to put one over a buffer tube last night and couldn't get it to go more than 1/2". There's a yellowish plastic material inside where the buffer tube goes and it's uneven with an 1/8" lump in the bottom of the bore. Anybody else have this problem? Suggestions?
Also; can someone tell me if A1 and A2 buffers, springs and tubes are the same. Side by side, it appears they are the same and the A2 has the spacer at the rear to make up the difference in length, and a corresponding longer screw. |

A1 and A2 are the same just add the spacer for the A2. As for the filler inside the stock, take a dowel, wrap it with fine sand paper, insert and twist.Be sure to check your progress often, you don't wanna take too much off.
Hell,,the 1st time I had to do one,I didn't even use a dowel, just rolled the paper real loose and twisted away. |

This. Hell,,the 1st time I had to do one,I didn't even use a dowel, just rolled the paper real loose and twisted away. Rob same here except I'd already cut myself on the buffer tube threads trying to remove it after I used a little too much tenacity putting on the stock. Had already figured it out when HnB suggested using the dowel. Man that tube cut was more annoying than a paper cut. |

The extra length on the A2 is better for prone shooting. The Marines, being long range rifleman all, wanted this to better suit their style on the known distance ranges. Pretty much the same story for the dial-a-range rear sight. I think if the Army had been left alone with it the M16A2 would be pretty much indistinguishable from a C7.
EDIT: Beaten to the punch by mere seconds by someone who cannot aim! |

If your stock is anything like the dozens that I've seen over the years, then the "lump" you're speaking of is probably a shallow-depth air-bubble or pocket that formed in the core material during the manufacturing process. The "lumps" can usually be squashed back down using a finger or thumb & then the stock mounted onto the receiver extension using minimal-to-slight effort, though this becomes more difficult with older/aged stocks as the foam tends to harden & become brittle with age. If you're having trouble squashing the "lump" back down, you can always "pop-the-top" so-to-speak (chip into the bubble), and then use a small round-file to smooth-down the edges that remain. |

I bought an A1 stock, grip and handguards from US Collectors Ordnance. To save money, I got them in the lowest quality he has available: buttstock (good), pistol grip (good), and handguards (fair). I'm happy with them. There's a few dings and scratches, but they are all cosmetic.
I had no problem installing the stock. |
