Supprised no one has grabbed this. The add states it's a large pin upper. but you can see the pin hole recessed and it has the auto sear cut out.
it's been relisted at least once. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=282465084 |

What is the reserve on it? Looks to be a good find to me, since coming across slickside uppers and especially original chrome carriers is not an everyday event in this market. no reserve- starting bid of $300 carrier has added stakes, which those interested in build accuracy, won't want here are some in better condition...chromed slickslide carriers $125 http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_7_159/965947_Retro_Colt_Chrome_carriers__Parked_Carriers__Colt_carry_handle__2_chrome_BCG_s_back_up_for_grabs.html complete upper receivers go for $100-$125 |

Something tells me that gas key is not original to that carrier in the auction.Different sheen to the chrome. I also don't like any of the stake marks on it. The top stakes are too close to the screws compared to all the Colts I've seen and owned. The side stakes are a known later addition as the original tiny top stakes could fail.
ETA,closer inspection tells me the screws are 2 different type and not original to the carrier. To expand on the top stakes.Typically the stakes are held back a bit from the screws and when it's punched, the material from the key is pushed into the sides of the screw heads. Not the case here. I say, definitely a replaced key. But,,also add,,just my opinion.

The TM even described the proper way to do it. Factory correct? no. G.I. correct? maybe.

No argument here,,yes, repairs were and are done. But I'm really looking at the finish on the key as compared to the rest of the carrier.I still have 6 original chrome carrier groups here ( a few from EE seller machinehead) and the finish on all the keys match the carrier bodies.Same goes for all the ones I've sold to other members. On that one in the auction, the key is slightly duller (in my opinion) then the rest of the body.Makes me question it.
ETA,,and to boot,I have just a key I bought off member Quiet several years ago,,and it too is the same as all my other chrome sets. |

Agreed. Yes, the starting price is high, but figured with the way things are going someone would have bid on it by now.
You got it. At $200 someone would have probably jumped immediately and $225 is high end pricing for those parts. Most would just rob the port door and send it down the road. Tar Heel Surplus has or had 604 receivers recently around $100. Snipertewg has or had chrome carriers that weren't Bubba'd up very recently. Think seller is just testing the waters and preying for that special person. People are paying way too much for this stuff lately. I know it's RBRD and one can spend on what they want but for the most part, retro parts are worn out surplus stuff replaced for a reason. 86 also hit it dead on. If it's square forge or early rare the price goes up and if the carrier wasn't Bubba'd it would be priced more realistically. When they started cranking out model munbers by the millions and the milspec became stable most aren't really worth anything to anyone but the owner and retroland members. I'd almost sell at current market prices but then my dumb a$$ would just buy more with the coins. LC's frenken 300 yd varmit killer had got me wanting another 13 lb rifle and if memory serves I never looked back on the last one I unloaded. Looks like a nice piece of glass. |
