Its been on there for a long time. It looks like the DPMS stock. I saw one in much better shape for $75 a few months ago. I paid $50 for mine when they were available.

Yes, like said above...it's been there awhile and agree with the above statement.

Its not even a DPMS stock.
The wire frame isnt cut for A2 lowers. Its still going to need a modification to work with an A1.
The aluminum block hasnt been finished all the way (note the bottom edge that is both square and rounded on the end.. Its suppoed to ne rounded).

Hate to say, but I think you guys are wrong. I believe that's genuine.

Its not even close. The picture I have from the Ian V. Hogg book Military Small Arms of the 20th Century shows the M231 stock with a MUCH shorter tube and the locking block which screws to the receiver looks absolutely nothing like what DPMS made. I have the DPMS and mine looks like the auction piece. To make the DPMS look correct you have to grind away a good portion of the block.

If you go to Midwayusa.com they still show the picture of the DPMS stock although it says discontinued by the manufacturer.

The easy way to tell is when the wire stock is collapsed, it becomes un-useable since the tube sticks out past it.

Could it be a combo of genuine & home grown parts?

none of that looks real to me.  It looks very much like my DPMS except for the finish, and the button position.

I agree. None of it looks like the pics I have of the real deal M231.
I do not know if DPMS made 2 types with 2 different positions for the lock pin but I have seen both. Both have the same incorrect shaped design block that attaches to the lower. Its the same exact shape except for the position of the locking pin so I would think its DPMS's design.

I will eventually modify mine to look more correct (along with every other project.....)

By the way I'm fairly new to the forum but have always been into what is now considered retro. When did it become retro??.....I'm getting old.

Any chance you could post a side by side comparison picture, trying to understand what you guys are talking about.
I've never seen the real deal, nor DPMS version.

I'll look through my saved photo file tonight when I get home, but here's some quick image search results to show you what we mean.

The photos we have seen, of actual, original 231s, with stocks, use a block with more contours to it.  The entire underside is milled out (or really, probably forged/cast like that), the cross pin area has it's own bump out, etc.

Original M231:

Examples of 231 style stock block:

The Repros have a block which is one solid extrusion, with none of the extra contours:

Also note the extreme difference in the length of the buffer tube between the original posted above (shorter than stock in the closed position) and the repros, which use standard carbine length buffer tubes.

Edit: I'm home now, and dug my stocks out.  I have two repro stocks, which I think are both (?) DPMS.  I don't know of anyone other than DPMS that made repro stocks for real ARs.  There are plenty of airsoft ones out there.

Both stock blocks show the same profile as the GB item.  They are both parkerized however.  One has the button located to the rear like the GB item, one has it in the middle of the bracket.  The material removed from the wire of the stock for the stock to slip over the lower receiver is much greater in the one with the button to the rear.  That makes me think the center pinned one, is meant for A1 lowers, and the rearward pinned one is for A2 lowers, but I don't know that for sure.  Both stocks have the small area (1/4") rounded over toward the receiver.  The center pinned stock is also MUCH harder to move.  It takes considerably more effort (like to the point of stepping on the stock and pulling the barrel upward) to get it to move.  The rearward pinned stock is much easier to manipulate by hand.

Interesting. You learn something every day. Me, maybe every other day - my brain can't handle the input anymore.

Just curious, Turnerboy will those handguards in the mockup work with a regular endcap or do they need a special fit one to work?

They need a 231 barrel collar, or a special endcap like the 633 uses.
Garrison probably still has/makes them.

IIRC they are the same as the 633 right? Shorter than a standard carbine too...but I've been wrong so many times lately I hesitate to even hazard a guess. Damn I'm getting old.

231 and 633 use the same handguards.  In the 231, the handguards just fit into the barrel collar.  On the 633 though, you need a cap.  That cap is pinned in place by the front sight and a step on the barrel.  But if you're trying to do something other than a 231 or 633, you'll need to get/make a cap for the handguards.  I don't know the dimensions involved off the top of my head, but if you need them, let me know and I can measure.

There's some great threads in the archives on both 633 and M231 builds. Both examples really blow my mind from a 'difficult to build' POV. Machining the front axial collar on the M231 is a real pisser from what I understand.
