With CMMG's new lightweight .22lr barrel out now, I am going to make something off of it... not sure yet.

I am going to get rid of the flattop and M4 HG's. I plan to use an A1 upper and am open to cutting down the barrel to any given length.

Any suggestions of a final configuration are appreciated.

Well, as I understand it, 16" .22 barrels stick out as much as 14.5" .223 barrels.  If that's true, you could use an A1 upper, change the FH to an A1 and use carbine handguards and a Gen II stock with an A1 grip for a pretty decent 653 replica.  Or, since you don't need an FA for a .22, you could use a 604 upper for a 654 look.  You could even keep the A2 FH and use an A2 lower for a hack job 653 look, like mine (in .223):

I'm waiting for them to sell that barrel separately...I think I will do an XM177E2, to go with my 5.56 and 6.8 versions

Are there any retro models that use the A1/C7 upper?
