So, how can I build the most accurate(looks anyway twist rate and small details matter little) xm 177 e2 (629)clone . The problem is this will be a gift to my father. I dont want to deal with nfa. I do however want ot to be as close as I can get it to what he carried in Vietnam.

KINO Barrel with Midlength hand guards & brick 4.5 moderator pinned & welded. (Non-NFA)
Boywonder777 has some nice looking XM type stocks.

This may help.

you don't need midlength gas for a XM177E2 clone..you can use a Bushmaster 16"  Superlight barrel (assy. w/o lug) and the aforementioned Brick moderator to get the visual results you're after

Pick up a set of 6 hole hand guards, an A1 grip, an old-school CAR stock, an A1 upper and perhaps a Nodak A1 lower to go with all that. Add the LW barrel cut down with the brick moderator and grenade ring welded on and you will be pretty close to what you are looking for. If you want to go the extra mile get it all color matched in XM gray and do a paint job on the stock to make it look like vinyl-acetate.

I am waiting on a mid-length LW to do an E1 style without going NFA but if you're doing E2 no problems. Yours would be a hair longer than an actual E2 but worth it to avoid the NFA hassles.

Here's some of mine.  Some use bricks and some use Total Silence.  Sling on the top is a green "seat belt" and the others are "GP" slings from a fellow member.

Nice carbines!

ETA: Is the second one from the top NFA?

Nope.  It's a permanently attached "brick" moderator.

The black rubberized bumper paint on a fiberlite after a couple coats looks and feels pretty accurate for cheap.  Even after 6 months it still sticks to my carpet though.

AR15guy,  Very,  very,  nice carbines.  Once I made and used my first GP sling with help from member DocMike's tutorial I replaced all my cotton and nylon USGI's with them on my carbines.  Never put one on a retro rifle though.  Except for the 9mm and moderators I kinda thought I was looking at mine.  Funny how RBD is.  Never tried crack but it can't be as good as building and shooting an AR.

thats what i was thinking too.. barrel looks a little short compared to my pinned and welded non-nfa and its just barely over 16" by a hair:

Btw, i see lots of these that look a little too close to me..
