I'd like to hear from anyone who's had any experience with those older style E-A lowers .... the ones with the funny looking 'J' around the mag release button.
What can you tell me about these things, and what is your opinion of 'em

they are preban so good for those in a ban state.  they are grey which is a decent match to XM grey and the flare out the lines above the mag release button to match the portion under the ejection port cover so it's a cleaner look unless you have the older style uppers that are machined in that area.

like you said mag fence is a little funny and i don't like the stops around the FIRE/SAFE area.

+1  I used them to make many builds in the late 80s and early 90s.  There best feature was the nice hard coat XM gray anodizing, and universally excellent fit and finish.  As stated the mag button fence was a bit ugly, and more than one had the nasty little safety stop nibs sheared off for various reasons (i.e. ugly, and other reasons we will not discuss here!)  Before I knew about NDS retro lowers, I was actually looking for one to do my retro.  I wouldn't mind finding one cheap just to have.

Is it that bad?

Let's just say it interfered with a full 180 degree movement of certain varieties of safety/selector switches.  In the 80s, drop in auto-sears were plentiful.

The early one's were cast, not forged like the lowers today. I haven't personally broken one, but I have a friend that did. Other than that the one's I've owned were fine.
