OK so my wife got me a SP1 a few years ago and I haven't got to shoot it much. The past few times I shot it I had double taps like an auto. Lots of fun but kind of scary. SO while trying to figure it out noticed that the pin that the hammer rides on had slipped out a ways and hammer will fire as soon as you release the trigger. Checking drawings on here I noticed he hammer has what is call a J pin in bottom that acts like a retaining pin that holds the hammer pin from sliding out and mine is missing. I have never pulled hammer before so don't know how it was lost but now I need one or new hammer. The question I have is can I use a newer hammer from like DPMS or do I need a SP1 special hammer and if so does anyone know where I can get one. Thanks ahead of time for info

So, you've pulled out your hammer and know for sure that the pin is gone? Any standard AR-15 hammer, notched or un-notched, should work.

Thanks . that is just what I needed to know. Yep after looking at drawings here and reading up on the hammer assy I pulled the hammer for first time and found the hole where the J pin goes but no pin so now I know why hammer retaining pin works out fron lower. Will kind of miss the double taps..lol..but noticed the sear has scar from the hammer riding off center, hope no real damage. Great site here.

I thought the SP1 had a large pin hammer and trigger?

Nope, just a large pivot pin. The ban era Colt rifles from the early '90s have the large FCG pins.

You should be able to get a J pin and spring from Brownell's.

Somebody, at some point, had some parts left over and went "meh, who needs 'em?"......

Good catch on your part.  Just order them up and you'll be good to go.

Don't shoot your rifle anymore until then.  Sort of technically, you have not only a machine gun.  "Worse" is the fact that you

have a rifle that is NOT operating properly.  THAT is a BIG safety issue.

Get your J-pin and spring and then you can go to town.
