Was accessorizing the 607 again.

Added Match front sight post, Rapidex rear sight windage knob, Single plane low light rear sight, Troy battleaxe short pistol grip.

I think the mods are quite subtle and keep the carbine within the realm of retro.
She looks, feels and handles soo sweet, just like a 607 should.

As usual, comments and ideas are welcome.

I have a few slings and hardware I am trying to sort out.
I am open to any ideas on a sling from those of you that know anything about the ones pictured.
The sling on the bottom is an original boonie-packer sarafi model from back in the 70s (I think) so it may not be to out of place.

If your going modern and that's a Magpul mag ?, maybe try a Magpul 20 rounder.

Keep the mag in the 20 rounder realm, but other wise very cool indeed

Looks good. Some change here and there makes things fun.

I modernized mine once

Noveske KX3 to tame the noise. I once performed a science experiment. These things work,, really.
It would look better with a 10" barrel.
10.5" 607's look good with a 3 prong or A1 IMO.
Make a simple sling using kevlar around the FSB using the black GP strap.

Throw a "sully" stock in the mix and let the h/g's super size it.

Thanks for the kind words guys.  God I love this thing.  I really must have some kind or disease, cause I can't keep my hands off it.

I can't do the single point easily because of the top charger, but I did want a red dot sight.

I managed to swap out the match front sight for a tiny red fiber optic front sight post.

With the large rear single plane sight it makes the sight picture seem like a single point with out the blackness.

Thanks for the info on the sling mounting jhud.  I'm still thinking about that one.

UPS man just dropped of my new Ares GXR-35 Black Lightning Piston system with carrier.

Now we will see how well I can hide that.

More to come!

20rd Pmag and an AAC blackout non-suppressor mount FH. The AAC will modernize the 3 prong open FH.

Didn't know the 607 had the top charging handle. And i've never seen them outside of the prototype AR10s or repro AR10s

ETA: I'm not really a retro fan, but this rifle is pretty cool.

Thanks Joe,

The 607 didn't come with the top charger, it just feels so damn right that I think it belongs there.

I will look into the AAC non blackout thingy, haven't been there yet.  I think Wilson had one that looked pretty cool too.

Also just added an Armalite bolt hold open, they look pretty cool.

Did you get the non-mount FH or the 51T suppressor mount FH?

Why are you getting different handguards?

I think he just has to mod the inner arear of the 607 guards to accomadate the Ares system.  Hopefully it will work with the small 607 guards without too much modification.
If it won't fit...there's always the the fatter rear end 607 guard version.

+1 I actually like the Troy battle grip on that, which surprises me. I've always been a function over form guy myself, so I really like what you've done. I like 'pure' retro builds, but I am also a fan of 'bastardized combat worthy go to retros'  if that makes sense. I've got a couple wild ideas in the works myself now that I'm working again YAY!!! Not only working, but OT and good money. How the hell did that happen?

BTW, I really like how you did the sling. Like to hear more about it and would love to know how it shoots on a practical course. Seems like just the thing to take to a carbine class and wow the guys with M4s....

ETA - didn't even realize it was wearing an AAC blackout, but I'm ordering one of those soon myself for a build - I like the looks. Very effective too. It wasn't until I went back and looked at the pic again that I realized it was an NDS32 upper! That really does it for me. Great build man!!!

Righto,  Just getting a spare set in case the hacking doesn't go well.

I only need about 1/8" increase in HG height at the front to clear the Ares piston.

Per your recommendation, I went with the non-mount.  Besides it was about 1/2 the price of the 51T.

This I want to see! Now that I see disposable income in my future I really want to do a registered SBR lower. I wish I had the coin for a registered class IIi lower, but I can't even begin to justify that now. Truthfully, I see an SBR as being more useful to me than a FA, although I really envy Olgunner his purchases - great choices, and great investments, something an SBR is not.

Quick update on the piston conversion.

The piston designed bolt carrier is way heavier than standard carrier, not a real problem yet tho.

On the NDS 32 top charger, the groove on the bottom of the charging handle is not wide enough.

Seems the top charger trigger is much thicker in this area than a std charging handle is.  So the carrier was cut slightly to prevent any contact there.

Everything else went together fine, but the skinny triangular front handguards had to be notched for piston clearance at the 12 o'clock front location.

I will need to replace the handguards but I need to do so without destroying the 607 profile.

This is where youze guyz come in.

Ideas?

Trying out the booniepacker sling.

Rapidex windage knob and Troy pistol grip.

Blackout flash hider.

Armalite bolt release.

Modified handguards and piston assembly for Ares GXR 35 Black Lighting piston conversion.

Piston assembly profile is so low that it almost fits under the handguard.

You need a set of 607 "a" handguards that are the big end instead of the skinny one. I think someone here makes a retaining ring, and member jhud makes custom "fatty 607" HG.

10-4 on this.

Who makes the larger rear cap/ring ?

Still looks good for a "modernized" 607.  Will it shoot as shown ?

Talk to Jhud. I can give you the measurements, but the cap is still an issue. FWIW I like the 'rear half' fatty triangular HGs a lot more than I though I would.

Too late.

 Chissel is a gonner.

But, on a positive note;

I ordered some hand guard rings from Edwin at total silence, so they should be here soon as they had them in stock.

Not really sure that I like the fatty handguards or not, guess I will need to handle a set.

To me, even tho they came on the A model, they just don't do it for me on the 607.

I am still open to ideas.  I may just have the piston upper as a separate upper.

The retro forum was founded to collect and disseminate information on the older rifles (and, secretly, the demonstrate to manufacturers that there was a market for the 'retro' lowers - the result being the NDS lowers!).  It's a great place to start.  Welcome!
