Hi all AR15.COM, this is my first post and I have a question.
Is there a way to figure out what year my Colt AR-15 Sporter Match HBAR was built?

serial # and pictures would help.
There is a database of SP1's.

You can also call colt or write them a letter.

Wasnt the term sporter used to get around ban requirements?

The SP1 serial number database won't cover the HBAR.
The SM HBAR is an A2 and the SP1 is an A1.
If you post some pictures we can tell you if it is an early or late model Sporter Match HBAR, but that's about all.
Best bet is to call Colt.

Easy big fella.

Since the OP is new, take the time to explain how things work around here.

We were all new at one time.

When I see a new one happen minutes after another thread gets booted I jump to conclusions. Maybe its paranoia over nothing.
Maybe my concerns are legit. Either way, the universe keeps rotating around the earth.

Though its not clearly defined, the retro section is meant for discussion or retro AR rifles. A1 era weapons. Early variants. Colt SP1's. clones of such rifles. I say A2's are the event horizon. Hbar's are not within some very exclusive requirements.  Ive been guilty of posting pics of an Hbar, but that was only to show some 607 handgaurd variations I made. I felt bad about it and wished that I had a correct barrel to show off.
Sometimes n depth disscusions of other retro weapons turn into very informational threads.

Maybe someone can add on to or correct me?

Welcome!

My I purchased my Sporter Match HBAR in June 1990. It has all of the A2 features and furniture except of course the bayonet lug. It is also built on an SP1 slab side lower receiver and uses an SP serial number:

There are no accurate on-line sources for checking the date but I believe if you call Colt they will tell you when it was built. But they will research it's original configuration and such for a fee.

Bumblebee_Bob,

Did you purchase it new?

The later Sporter Match HBAR had full fence.

My Sporter Match HBAR was bought new in late '90 or early '91, IIRC.  Blue Label box, serial # MH200xx, slabside lower and pinned sear block.

Sure did. At the time I was working for a dealer and ordered it about as soon as Colt started making ARs for civilians again. We got two in, the other was identical, and I picked the one I thought was "nicer." Still have the box with the Blue Label too. I figure it must have been among the first released.

The Delta HBAR that was posted recently had a slabsdie A1 lower (basically a 601 lower with a larger pin) and the A2 upper. If a C7 upper is retro, then I say a Sporter II A1 lower is too. (OMG what have I done?)
