So gentlemen, what have I done?

I got this from the EE. Played with it for about 20 minutes and I absolutely love it regardless but, I want to see what you guys can tell me about it. I plan on using it for a late 601 build.

I assembled it with parts I had on hand for the photos. The firing pin and cam pin are from my 604 clone and the retainer pin is a DPMS I bought awhile back.

Bolt is MP marked (the M is very faint). It has the cuts behind the locking lugs. The carrier key doesn't look the same as the 601's that I've seen and the staking looks a little rough. Otherwise its very clean and has minimal wear. I'm thinking, very late 601/602/very early 604?

Like I said, I'm pleased with it, just looking for a little more info is all.

Well, let me try since I'm still in the learning phase.

For it to be 601/602 the key would have to be completely round and the band on your bolt would have to be narrow.  So, I'm guessing 604.

The key was restaked at some point with the original on top and the side staking added later.

3/4 round key,2 side stakes added, wide band, later extractor, wrong fire pin, modified FLAT head is preferred. Still GTG for 602 and early 604.Overall nice set Bro.
Check with GB seller MX56 (member PrivateSnafu),,he has fire pins.

I vote for the 604.

I jacked the firing pin and cam from another build just to give it a test.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for a correct flat head pin.

I suppose, ultimately, which one it ends up becoming will depend on what kind of uppers and barrels I can find.

I agree with m1sniper - correct for a 604 - the gas key is wrong, and it'd be a narrow band bolt, but other than that, (I LUVS chrome BCGs!) Very nice!

If only my wallet agreed right now.

I wonder how much the reliability of current m16's would increase if they never did away with chrome BCG's? I know there were studies done back when they switched but lets face it those studies were a little biased, they cared a lot more about reducing cost than they did the reliability of the rifles.

Hard to say. These chrome parts are super slick, virtually nothing sticks to them. Combine that with a chrome chamber and bore and... who knows.

I've actually been toying with the idea of building a modern rifle with an original Colt chrome BCG. Problem is, I'd want it to have forward assist serrations, and we all know how hard original forward assist chrome BCG's are to come by.

Why not use a Young Mfg. carrier? If it's going to be a "modern" build anyway, chrome is chrome no?

I just like the thought of having an original '60s M16 carrier.

Just ask the Mods if you can use the BFL but make it Silver instead of Black.
