I've been collecting early AR parts, planning to build multiple 601 clones, but keep finding excuses to put off the builds (you know, excuses like having to work, raise kids, etc.).  Well this past week I got the 601 barreled upper that El_Tirador was selling and it is in beautiful condition. Nice enough that it inspired me to get one of these together.  Since the upper was so pretty, I decided it deserved the green furniture.

It's not entirely original (yet).  Besides the NDS lower, it has a later bolt cam pin and fire control group. I have most of the parts stashed away here so I'll upgrade (is "upgrade" the right term when you replace new parts with old parts??) it later, but the biggest issue right now is the difference in color between the upper and lower.  Depending on the lighting, it's not a terrible mismatch (it shows up better in these photos than in real life), but it catches my eye.  It's not just a light-dark thing...the 601 upper just has a completely different tint to it.
I think the lower needs to go to Victor.  We'll see how good his 601 color is.

I had considered having the lower engraved, too, but with the real 01 coming, that just doesn't seem as important now. I was going to do it so I'd have something that "looked" authentic, but now if I want to see (or show) authentic marking, I'll be able to do that with #748.

Anyway, here's this one––so far. I'm going to replace the selector detent spring (and maybe the detent...or the selector) because the selector just feels a little sloppy.  But it function tests okay, and as soon as I have a couple hours to get to the range, I'll take it out and see how the old barrel shoots.  I'll also post some closer photos next time I strip it down.

I've noticed an interesting thing about the green furniture. It works very well as camo as it seems to change with changing light.  In bright sunlight, you see that beautiful green that most of us think of as 601 green.  But in flatter light (like these shots), the green tones down a bit. And as dusk falls, the green fades to a shade not too much lighter than black.
Maybe it's just my aging eyes playing tricks, but I think it's a pretty cool effect!

Very, very nice, glad you were able to purchase it. Hope it shoots great. Just don't see many of those any more. Sweet build all the way down to the waffle mag. Kinda would like to know the cam pin difference myself.

+3 on the differences of the cam pin.

The 601 color is more of a brown, isn't it? That is the way my 601 receiver is anyway.

Looks great! Maybe one day for me, but definitely not now haha.

As far as color match goes, that lower looks kinda dry in the pictures, so maybe it could use a little oil?

Regarding the color...brown?...maybe.  Hard to put a finger on it, though. In the house, the color changes depending on what room I'm in.  I think I need direct sunlight to try and figure it out!

Now, as for the cam pin, the only reason I've listed it as a non-original part is because that's what it said in the GB ad.  i figure if El_Tirador says the cam pin isn't original, it's probably not original.  But as to any difference between new and old, well that's a whole other story.
I pulled the BCG out of this one today and dug out another one I've had for a while.  I also compared them both to my photos of my 01 in ATF purgatory. And damned if I can see any significant difference.
Judge for yourselves...(In these shots, the pin on the left is––to the best of my knowledge––original to a 601. The pin on the right is the new acquisition.)
The only detail that might be detectable is the amount of bevel around the round end of the pin.  The original item might have a slightly more pronounced bevel, but I don't really want to make that call until I've seen more samples.

I did notice some other difference in the BCGs, but will post those in a separate thread.

It's not terribly dry, but I'm sure it would darken up if I gave it a good soaking. Thing is, I think the color would still be off.
Might be worth a shot, though, at least until I finally convince myself to send the lower to Victor.

Aren't you supposed to christen it by breaking a beer over it or something? Looks great bud.

For someone looking closely for such things, the color difference (upper/lower) is noticeable.
But, to me (an admitted fuss budget about weapons    )...I would not have noticed it unless you mentioned it as you did.
Maybe I was stunned into a stupor by that furniture.
It's a beautiful piece, as is, and I would just enjoy it that way, if it were mine...which it isn't.

I don't know that there is any difference in early cam pins and modern cam pins.
They're the same as far as I know.

I guess I was more wondering if the previously owner knew for a fact that the cam pin was not original or assumed it was not original because it was not chrome.I still get asked from members to please find them an original colt chrome cam pin.For the record, colt did NOT make a chrome cam pin.

For some reason, I always thought the 601's had a stainless steel cam pin. Olgunner set me straight last night.
