Why did they use a moderator on the early carbines in lieu of a more common place style flash supressor?  What to the moderators really do?

I always thought it was to get enough back pressure to get the 10.5 inch barrels to cycle reliably. turns out all they really needed was to lengthen the area in front of the FSB. so now we have the 14.5 inch barrel.
I could be wrong though.

If your talking about the XM-177 carbines this is why. The early XM-177 had a three prong flash suppressor on them but the muzzle blast and flash was deafening, and blinding, in combat situations. The following excerpt explains more.

The first redesigned CAR-15 "Commando" SMG to see wide spread use in Viet Nam was the XM-177. The XM-177 used the round handguards of the USAF Survival Rifle and retained the 10-inch barrel. Colt's developed a 4.5-inch "sound and flash" suppressor to reduce the muzzle flash of the short barrel. The specialized suppressor had six longitudinal slots cut in the end (similar to the enclosed "bird cage" flash suppressor that had replaced the 3-prong unit on the M-16 rifle). The specialized suppressor had an inner and outer shell; the inner shell had holes drilled for the muzzle flash to enter the space formed between the inner and outer walls of the shells. The new noise and flash suppressor reduced the blast signature (sound decibel level) to below that of the M-16A1 rifle.

I agree with most of the above.  The XM-177 moderator however reduced the muzzle blast to about equal to the M16A1, not below that level.

My question would be how many folks make a moderator that slips over a 16" barrel to simulate a model 629/630, and how much work is it to make them look good?  Would I be better off just building a 653 and use a 16" pencil barrel ? I have very limited funds, and I am not really interested in using one of the 11.5" barrel with the pinned 5" flash hiders. Spending the money for a SBR stamp is out of the question as well.

I saw the title, and thought I was getting called out.

I think Bushmaster makes the slip-over fake moderator.

ETA: I think 45Bravo makes one also.

hahaha no worries, you guys do a good job here.

Anybody have pics of the Brick slip-over moderators?  Also, are the bushmaster and DPMS slip-over moderators reasonable facsimiles of a real retro moderator?  I am thinking about a slip over for my retro make-believe carbine using triangle carbine length handguards and the M231 wire stock.

I don't think Brick makes a slip-over version of his moderator

the Bushmaster CAR 15 is what 45Bravo modified as his first retro reproduction, so I would assume their slip-over is pretty close

That quote pretty much sums it up, the moderator was supposed to be a sound suppressor even though it was a piss poor excuse for one. Maybe what they intended was a combat worthy, built to the hilt supressor. But when all was said and done it didn't reduce the sound on a .223 more than a couple DB. TSI used to make those for collectors but we explained up front that you don't buy one because you want sound reduction. You buy one because you want an accurate reproduction. And I am proud that they did have a good resemblance. Even if they were pricy they were still less than half the cost of a Colt version and in better shape too.

Not sure why the pic isn't posting. If you want to look it over go to this URL. This IS NOT AN ADD! I am out of business. Just showing off some old pics. http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t289/WA-Tom/?action=view¤t=Moderator4.jpg

You may have a problem in the slip-over dept. As far as I m aware(that s not too far) Most of the slip overs I ve seen have a .750 bore,  you made mention of pencil barrel (.625 ), sounds like a case for 45bravo. I ran a real one in the Nam in 1970 (USAF) and it was a pencil with the the mod screwed on the end of a 10 1/2 -12 1/2 in. barrel. I m not really sure as to length as at the time I really didn t give a  flop, it worked great and never gave me any problems. More worried about cold beer and hot women. tailpipe

I ran one, too.  On a 10" barrel but we had some 11.5"s available too.

Only complaint was you could not get tracers to stabilize through the moderators.
