1. Has anybody lightly sanded a mottled butt stock to get rid of scratches?  Are the results of sanding one of these stocks favorable or will it ruin it?

2. Was the port firing rifle the only version to be made with a wire stock, or were there rare and obscure carbines that used the same wire stock?  Anybody have pics?

There were no other rifles/carbines to my knowledge that used the wire stock.  And in large part, the 231 didn't even really use it.  I haven't seen a battlefield version WITH the stock yet.  It seems more like something they tried out, but most soldiers didn't care for or want them.  Although that could arguably be said of the 231 in general.

The 'mottles' are actually gobs of fiberglass, and they are not just on the surface.  Sanding won't make your beloved mottles disappear, and I guess me asking you to paint it black won't sway your opinion.  I have sanded a number of stocks (prior to repainting them; sorry, couldn't help myself), and it is just like autobody sanding with progressively finer paper.  You can even wet sand it.
Black shoe polish will tone down the mottles, if that isn't too heretical an idea.

too modern I guess, but this is what I was thinking about.  I may try something like this but with the retro touch.

Yes you can use 1000 grit sand paper, wet or dry or 0000 steel wool on the stocks, they clean up nice.  If the surface is too dull after sanding, you can oil it or hand rub with some Flitz or similar polish. Mother's Mag polish works well. Sanding will expose more of the brownish color on mottled stocks.
