My current 602 project will leave me with my first fixed stock upper.  I was thinking I can use this lower as an excuse to build a precision upper to go along with my retro upper.  But to keep it in the theme, I was considering do what some people do with their old muscle cars and make a resto-mod, or retro-mod upper with a SPR barrel.  The one thing I can see being a problem though is using a scope with the carry handle upper.  I was wondering what my options are to get a scope mounted low on the carry handle to make it worth mounting a scope up for some accuracy.  Or, should I just turn my 16" kiss carbine into a precision rig by replacing the stock, barrel and carry handle since I already have a 10.3" tacticool carbine and forget the retro-mod idea?

I'm all for retro-mod as a concept (my '67 Mustang has rack & pinion steering and coil-overs at all four corners).  I think an SPR barrel and matched bolt would be a great idea as long as you keep the appearance relatively close to retro.  To me, that would mean a retro flash hider and parked finish.  (I'm not sure I'd personally want to re-profile an SPR barrel so I'd probably leave it as is.)
There have been a couple guys around here who converted triangular handguards to free-float, too.  That would help.

As for the scope, there's no way to really get "low" with a carry handle, but that shouldn't hurt you much.
To get the magnification you might want for a serious shooter, you probably won't have too many retro options readily available, so I'd probably go with whatever glass I feel comfortable with and not worry too much about the historical accuracy.  Grab an ARMS #2 or a Leatherwood mount if you can find one (I don't like the look personally, but they seem to be pretty solid) and glass it however you want.

Hey, it's your rifle.  have fun with it––and post pics!

Not at all stupid.

I call the concept: Advanced Retro.

It is the blending of any and all good ideas from the history and leaving out the fluff.

For intance, IMO the M16A1 is a damn good design right out of the box....BUT there are some modern features that can be useful. The brass bump is much superior to the brass deflectors that poor lefties had to clip on in the 70s and 80s. Full mag fence lowers are useful for heavy duty guns and there is a nice plethora of bolts and buffers and modern springs to choose from.

I blend the light rifle concept and the streamlined look of yesterday with the technology, usefulness and strength of today's materials.....

BUT I'LL NEVER GIVE UP MY TRIANGULAR HANDGUARDS!!!! ( even if they are a bit "inferior" )

Here's my C7A1....my pride and joy:

It's designed to be an all around shooter and carrying gun. I have made a couple of changes. The Biothane sling is now on my A2 Gov't Rifle and the pistol grip has reverted back to an A2 but only bacause I can't find a minty A1...money being tight and all.

This gun is based on my Army experience with both the A1 and A2 in the late eighties. I found things that I like about both and I combined them into this.

I have a matching Carbine called my C8A1.

It rocks....

The C7A1 has a detachable handle.  The C7 having the fixed handle with M16A1 sights.  Both models have the M16A2 barrel (and round handguards, of course! ) –– larger diameter at the muzzle end.
