Could someone give me or point me in the right direction for some history/info on the Colt model 606? I have checked out Retro Black Rifle but not too much there in the way of history. When were these developed? Were they ever issued/ used in service? How many were made? Maybe just some background info to sort of "set the stage" so to speak.
Thanks, Ralph |

They came out in 1964.
Early versions had no bipod or used an M14 bipod. Later versions used an M60 bipod. A collar with anti rotation stops pinned to the end of the barrel kept the bipod from sliding rearward. A larger than normal split washer was used in conjunction with the flash hider to keep the bipod from sliding forward. They are not an official USGI weapon. Some were used by special forces in Vietnam (somebody around here has a picture). The 606 was replaced by the 741 in Colts product line when the A2 rifles came out. It is basically the same with except with an A2 upper and A2 handguards and uses a 1/7 twist barrel instead of 1/12. I don't know how many were made. |
