I posted this sometime back, but I was talking with Way-out-west today and told him I'd post some pics.
Started with an Armalite lower, I think it was refinished at some point as it is very grey, picked up a nice M-16A1 upper with forge codes, got the barrel from Coctailer last year, had it shortened to 15.25, then had the three prong silver soldered then welded on.
Never hurts to be overly legal.
Found the nice stock parts here and there, and picked up one of NDS's waffle mags.
Not correct as it has a standard serrated BC, not chromed, and not the right upper, or lower, but the overall take is nice. Handles super.

Comparison of waffle to standard 20.

And, I had the three prong fixed so the sight picture doesn't have flash going through, think inverted AR-180.

Anyone else with clonish builds?

Not exactly a pretty model...but they kinda grow on a guy, you know?

I think they are the ultimate combination of barrel length and sight radius. The best of both worlds.

They just needed a middy gas system to be perfect.

Who is cocktailer? Is he a member here that does barrel work, Like 45Bravo? Id like a 605 upper half, preferably with a 1-9  twist, but my last Idea of getting a 604 upper half and cutting it down kind of fizzled.

How reliable are the 605s with the original gas system? Are the people doing them today opening up the port?

45Bravo does the port work on rifle length gas systems. He has figured out what size hole works.

When I get around to finishing mine, I'll use a middy gas system.

I had a rifle length version years ago, and it had trouble in the cold up here in MN.

Wonder how a 605 would look with a 607 collapsible stock...

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Interesting idea!

My 605-ish upper is a Bushmaster Dissapator 1-9 twist (sadly) heavy barrel with fluting under the handguards. The barrel was shortened the last little bit so the 3 prong flash suppressor is tight up against the FSB, and then pinned and welded to keep it a title one upper for any rifle lower.

It is a lot heavier than I wanted, but over ten years ago it was the only game in town that I knew, and gave me some peace of mind for reliability. Like the NDS crew, I am in a fairly cold climate.

The upper has been 100% reliable on a number of lowers, including some friend's M16 full auto lowers.

I tried a heavy barrel dissipator 605 setup myself a while back. It was the only barrel I could get during the post election lunacy. Way too heavy! Sold it on. Now I'm thinking M4 profile dissy from BM. The M4 profile is fairly light in weight. Should be sweet.

Don't know, but with a 629 lower and a 30 rounder they look pretty tough.

My in progress 605, which was built from left over parts from my 602 is one of my favorites now.  I use my .22 conversion in it most of the time but it runs 5.56 just fine too !  I need to refinish the FSB from where I cut off the bayo lug, and then I can cut the barrel the rest of the way and pin/weld  the FH on.

Interesting rack markings.

I bet a dedicated .22 version wouldn't even need to have the flash hider pinned on, since the dedicated .22s have an extra inch or so of barrel set back in the upper.
