What did NODAK spud's  triangle hand   guards  sell for ? Or did someone else make them also? Length ?

I  saw a couple pairs  yesterday at the gun show, I think........They were  pre-molded. I just thought of them when I was at the NDS website.

I think they were 35 dollars, not 100% sure.  Condition looked normal, not new. If anyone was needing a pair of these  I might be able to pick them up at the next show.

The next big show is Mar 13. If you still need a pair send me an IM  a day or 2 before.
Does  anyone know how long they should be ? Are they Carbine length ?

edit,
M1sniper might have set for you

Don't know what the "new made" ones measure, but guys who have cut down regular hgs say between 6 1/4 to 6 3/8 inches.

thanks..

when I picked up the HG's , I  was looking to see if they were cut down. I was surprised to see that they were molded.

I'm really upset with myself, I just saw that I passed on an early 603 upper 10 days ago, because it had the wrong door

The original ones in The Black Rifle show 2 versions. One set has reg HGs with the back cut off, and a custom rear cap made to fit,,the other also uses reg HGs but with the front cut off. The set with the front cut uses the standard slip ring and the lip on the HGs to hold the back, and the front has a custom cap made..

Those (The Black Rifle page 177) are tool room samples.
They really pre-date the 607.
I'm building a copy of the top one.

Thanks for the pics Tex, was going to try to cut the rear down but now that I looked at the pics I am going to cut the front and make a front cap.

I am too, trying to make a front cap like the one pictured.

It is going to be a bit of work, and some fine soldering/grinding.

I though about just having a peice of 1/4" stock machined, but I must get the specs of the trangle shaped cap first.
On my lunch break I am going to work on it some more.

Everytime I think I'm building something unique, I find out several other people are building the same thing and 2 people already have.
I'm using a my65pan's 607 stock built out of a green 601 Type B stock.
I also have all the other 601 specific parts except the duckbill.
...oh, and the 601 handguards.
I hope to find a damaged or just cheap pair to cut down.
For now I'll paint a pair of cutdown black plastic handguards.

What got me started was the Colt slickside upper that I bought, couldnt see using it for anything but a retro build.
Saw the 607 builds and fell hard for that model.
will be a while before I can get the stock system done, want to get the correct pins, hg,s etc first
then go from there.

What kind of material are you guys using for the cap?

I am using an old tool box. The steel  is about as thick as a standard cap.
First I need to drill out a hole for the barrel and gas tube.
Then I am going to take that peice and put it on the barrel.
Then cut the HG's to the proper length.
After fitting the handgaurd to fit that plate flush, then take a band of steel, bend it to fit the contour of the front cap.

weld the lip to the plate..?

If someone had the specs of that that cap needs to be. I would pay someone to machine it out of a soild peice of steel.

Man that's gonna look killer. !

I guess the donor stock was already cracked or busted on the end.  I was gonna jump on it when Mark said he had one, but ya beat me to it.

Now I wish I had bought one of those damaged Type B's years ago.

Thanks Cracked, I'm ruined for life now.

I'm wondering if the early 601/607 pictured above didn't actually have a modified Type A buttstock.

Somebody should make a batch of those front plates.

I'm not quite done with my first 607, and now I have it bad to build a green duckbilled prototype.......

I still have some green paint, a damaged set of hgs........

For those that are interested, I ran into the guy again who is working on an alternative 607 style handguard.

I can't go too much detail, but he has the revised rapid prototype done (took two years as he works a lot of OT, and a friend of his who does plastic molding is doing the molds in his spare time) and he is supposed to give me a sample for "hard use" testing in the next 60 days or so.

I wonder what that ferrule is for in the center of the stock in the top model? It looks like it's positioned between the buffer tube and locking tube but I can't imagine what it's for.

Bending the cap is going to be hard.

It needs to be pressed.

This is starting to give me a head ache

I found an airsoft M16K conversion kit.

I have no clue it the retainer is the correct size or not.

That kit is 89$.

I would love to just order the cap and see if it works.

Do you have a log splitter ? They make great presses.

You can make a form out of hardwood in the shape of the front handguards. Then a female piece with clearance for the sheet metal you will be using. Use some steel pins too keep everything alligned. Place the forms and sheet metal in a hydraulic press and start pumping the jack. Trim the part as needed. Poor man's die set.

I will put some $$ up to getting production, at least to get a die set made.

I guess so. My RR would be awesome as a 607.
That and I want to make some money (or at least money back from the investment). Seems that this item in carbine and mid length might be a popular item.

carbine length is already being done though..go back to the first page of this thread and find the PK Firearms link, they've had them for awhile now.

now on the other hand if you did the rear cap for some mid-lengths then you would have my attention!!!

Look at the PK version...
It uses the front half of the A1 handgaurd , the SI version uses the front half and a rear cap.
I dont like the rear cap version (not skin friendly). The PK version just simply feels wimpy.
Also, I dont think the PK version is going to hold up to automatic fire. Feels like a molded plastic.
The USGI bakelite will handle some though

This is the rear section of the A1 HG. It needs a larger version of the triangle front cap and it works.

Check this brainstorm out.

Once I get ahold of a standard triangle cap I can fit the lipped section into place, apply adhesives, install a few brass pins , round the edges.. Then I have an acorn-rigged up fat triangle carbine hanguard.

You know, I just have to ask...
Could those be the front end and back end of the same pair of handguards?

I can't think of any reason not to do them both the same way...Unless they just sawed a pair smack in half and turned out a few caps?

that's the method I used for my middy as well

only thing with the mid lengths is you don't have to build it up as much as you have to. I only had to cut the front end off and glue it back in at the correct length.

How much heat can crazy glue handle?
It sticks this bakelite together like crazy.

I have the sections glued into place. Wont be drilling them for pins until the very last step. Need to find some fine threaded brass rods.

The MSDS for crazy type adhesive says "unstable at higher temps". I think Gorilla Glue might be the answer here. Once dry it is high heat resistant. Great stuff and sandable, paintable.

Here is my little contribution, however not really authenic retro.  I took out the fence on the lower with a Dremel tool and then repainted with Duracoat.  It didn't turn out too bad.  The triangle handguard is the after market type.  The barrel is a Bushmaster 1/7 lightweight.  Shoots great and is a nice light little carbine to have.

I first had a two position carbine stock on it but it didn't look quite right with the traingle handguards so I put the A1 stock on it.
