Does anyone know if 45Bravo can do 605 barrel work and if so what type of barrel would he need?  I'm thinking of buying one of those surplus A1 kits that recently hit the market with an in white barrel and was wondering if it could be easily made into a 605 barrel?  I'm asking anyone here because I know that 45Bravo is extremely busy with barrel work, so I figured I would get a quicker answer here.

Thanks

Yes, he chopped and threaded it, opened the gas post and pinned and welded the three-prong flash suppressor.

I had contacted him once to do one for me, and he replied that he would be able to cut any 20" lightweight barrel except for the Sarco barrels that were out then. At the time, these A1 kits were'nt out yet, so you'd need to contact him to see if he could cut one of these.

He can for sure cut any Military Issue barrel  (Colt, SAK, etc.)

Yes he does.  Email him.  He will reply with instructions on what barrel, timeframe, cost, and shipping instructions.

I was under the impression that a 605 barrel used the fsb for the front sight only and used a location under the handguard for the gas system.  That last picture just show a barrel that has been cut down.  Would the system cycle ok with the gas system left in the fsb and the barrel being cut to the 605 length?

The originals were just cut down and weren't 100% because of the short distance between the gas port and end of the barrel. There has been 1 or more reproductions done by guys here where they use a 16" M4 barrel cut down and reprofiled with a "fake" FSB at the end of the barrel. The second option will be harder to do and more expensive.  If this is just a range gun, I wouldn't worry about it being unreliable with a cut down rifle barrel. You will most likely only have problems if it is cold or with weak ammo.

I just sent him an MP barrel to be cut down and have a 3-prong flash hider pinned.
He does do it.
The 605 gas system is a normal rifle length system with an opened up hole.

Ok, thanks for all the information guys.  I'll contact 45Bravo and get more details.

I'm mailing off a Form 1 today.
Should I send off my barrel to 45Bravo and see who is faster?

You might as well, the wait is long for barrels.

Yeah, 45Bravo is extremely busy and probably has a ton of stuff to work on.  I got a confirmation from him back in July 09 that he had received my two barrels for a 607 and 629 project.  He just recently sent me another email on 11/24/09 saying he was getting ready to working on my two barrels.  I sent him another email checking on the status and have heard nothing from him.  I guess he is still swamped with this hobby and work.  Patience is a virtue, right?    I'll have my 607 and 629 finished as soon as I receive my barrels.

Has anyone had ADCO do the conversion?

45Bravo has had mine since noon today.
I wonder if he's done with it yet?

Is there an auto-bump feature for this post for the next 6 months?

I know, I know.... I'm getting caught up. You guys blasted us before the holidays. We were tripping over barrels and had more barrels falling on us. It was outright hazardous in the shop! We just finished up seven more barrels this week and I'll be back in the shop on Thursday. Please remember guys, we do this work as a hobby, not a full time job like some of these places. Some of this stuff takes time and with my full time LE job I have other things that sometimes "get in the way" so to speak. Things like court, training, school, and of course work. I happen to be one of a handful of instructors certified to teach firearms, SSGT, and PPCT so sometimes the powers that be just come up and tell me that I need to teach a class on short order. I also work 12 hour shifts which often end up being 14 to 15 hours. So, sometimes the hobby has to take a back seat. I also have a family as does my partner. For those of you who are married, you have my sympathy. Just please remember guys, this is a hobby and while we do things as professionally as possible we just can't do it ahead of everything else. That said, I took off all last week to get some more work done. We've had to order some more tools as we've actually worn some of them out. We've got 18 or so  barrels left in the shop and more on the way. Don't worry, we will get to them.

Anyway, back to the original topic. 605 barrels are pretty easy to do. We leave just enough barrel in front of the FSB to make a good shoulder for the split ring washer. From there we leave .625 worth of threaded barrel. The gas port is reamed to .110. The FSB is smoothed and the bayonet lug removed. Normally I will time the three prong flash hider so that an open slot is on top and a prong is on the bottom. If it is a non NFA barrel then we'll pin and weld the flash hider in place. Then the whole assembly is parkerized to a nice flat XM gray finish.

I have the first 605 that we did and it has run flawlessly since day one. I have not had a single malfunction with it. I've shot it mostly on days where the temperature was above 50 degrees. I've heard that these did not like extremely cold weather, but it never gets extremely cold in Alabama. To me, 40 is extremely cold, though I spent time in Colorado back in my Army training days and remember stepping off of a bus and having my nostrils freeze shut when I sniffled. WTF?

I love to share these videos as proof that the 605 will run with the standard length gas tube. I've never heard of any that we've converted having any functional issues. Most of those we've done have been Colt with one or two SAK barrels.

The only issue we would have with converting a barrel other than a Colt or mil spec is removal of the FSB. Colt and mil spec barrels use heat treated taper pins. I hate to say it but CMMG does not use heat treated pins. These will mushroom and cannot be removed from the FSB. I believe we've had one SARCO barrel recently that had straight pins. Those came out and went back in without issue.

For the record, we do not install FSB's. This is a total PITA without the proper jigs. You cannot take an existing FSB that has been drilled and put it on another barrel without experiencing alignment issues. The Colt and other mil spec barrels are drilled and reamed with a taper reamer at the same time. They have drills with dual heads that will drill the two holes simultaneously. They they ream them simultaneously. They can be done one at a time just as well but you have to start with a virgin FSB and a virgin barrel in order for it to work. Trying to get previously drilled barrels and FSB's to line up is next to impossible. This is why we don't waste our time with it.

Of all the conversions we've done we've never experienced any difficulty or had issues with mil spec barrels like those made by Colt or Bushmaster. You get what you pay for.

OK, enough of that. Enjoy the videos!

I'm not complaining about how long it takes.
I'm just reminding myself that it is going to take a while.
I've seen enough of your work to know it is worth the wait!
I'm just glad I finally got my barrel in the line.

Glad to hear you're getting caught up, Pat.  I keep thinking of emailing to check the status of my barrels and think - "Let the man work."  Esp. since it's a hobby.

It's nice to forget the barrels for a while - but I got my 605 lower finished this afternoon (thanks, APEX) which made me wonder...didn't I have barrels out?  Oh yeah...

Does a hefty case of CRS always come with RBRD???

ETA:  Totally worth the wait.  These barrels will finish my projects except the 607.

Yep! We will wait as long as it takes. Believe us, we really appreciate you doing this in the first place!

I've always been secretly jealous of UXB's 605 clone. He has the correct upper unlike my conglomeration! Still, it is fun to shoot and a real classic!

Beware, gratuitous sex 605 photos below!

And please guys, no offense taken to being ribbed about the long wait times. Sometimes I want to kick myself in the ass when I see the unfilled orders! It isn't a matter of procrastination, it's a matter of being "granted" time by the powers that be, namely my significant other and my bosses. I suppose she could fall into the latter category as well.
