I have a mint- litterally as new other than the eye cover material/strech-cord has deteriorated, 3x Colt handle mount scope. Not a scratch or mark of and, it looks as if it's never seen the light of day. I came on a mint `82 model SP1 Carbine I recently bought and I assume the optic is of the same vintage..
Anyway, a buddy wants the scope for his SP1 and I have no particular affinity for it unless it adds significant value to gun, itself too nice to shoot much if at all.
What's it worth? Or, perhaps more appropriately; does it make my SP1 Carbine that much more valuable such that I need to keep it simply to keep the original pair together?
He offered $250 preliminarily, I told him I'd take it if he would just apply the $ to an extra  HK PSP he has.  I want the pistol, figuring it's worth the $575 or so he's into it, but he seems attached to that pistol....damnit!
Anyway; Right or wrong to sell it? And a fair price? Last; how rare are these in as new cond?- the more rare/valuable the more likely he is to want to trade. Am I lucky?
Thanks Much as Always Guys,

They are not valuable in terms of independent use without an SP 1 or retro to attach it to.  In other words I wouldn't go looking for that scope to mount on a rifle.  The only rifle I would want it for is a retro one.  So their value is really more associated with teaming it up to a retro gun.

That's not knocking them, I actually need one for a SP-1.

If it came from the factory with the SP-1 it would be nice to keep them together.  That would mean your model is a R6002 instead of an R6001.

As far as actual price, we don't give that here because it's against the Code of Conduct.  If we did, it is likely this would become a Kelly's Blue Book of old guns forum and take away from the discussions about retro M-16's, naval jellied parts, cherry cough syrup and of course conducting the bi monthly "are A2's retro yet" poll.    ETA:  (Come on guys, I thought it was funny at 5:30 a.m.)

So, if it were me I'd keep it with the gun and pay the cash for the pistol.

i bought a 3x scope off gunbroker for my sp1.  got it for $300 plus shipping about 2 years ago.  Keep in mind a lot of Colt owners dont mind spending a little more just for the name.  Same goes for accessories.  I'd hang onto it if I were you as it will add resale value to your sp1 if you ever look to sell it.  colt instruction manuals, magazines, bipods and bayonets will also add to the resale value.

Also depends on which kind of scope it is.  My guess based on the year would be second from the right?

Left to right: US made, early Japanese, later Japanese, even later Japanese:

Good info, any approximate time frame for each of these scopes? I've got the 2nd Japanese version.

Thanks,
Rob

I bought a rifle that had a 3x20 on it. I looked at rifle while picking up some NoDak lowers. I thought the scope was a Chinese scope at first and did not pay attention to it. The rifle was all USGI expect the lower that was a Palmetto Armory. I did not feel the need for more parts or a rifle and left the store. That night a did some checking on the Colt scopes. I went back and bought the rifle just for the scope. I parted out the rifle for other builds. The funny thing was it was green. I guess someone want a 601 clone back in the late 70's. It also had full auto parts; a quick trip to the grinder fix that. I just finished sanding the green furniture down last week for a repaint.

I say sell it for what you feel it worth to you.

I'll dig it out of the safe tomorrow and report back, but I think it is the 2nd from the rt.
The only wear marks on the rifle are from where the scope was mounted, obviously they've been together for a long time,
but I never knew that it would have /could've possibly come stock w/the rifle. I take it that w/out original paperwork it would not be possible to determine
if model 6001/6002?

Thanks for all your help, a wealth of imformation as always.
Didn't know I wasn't supposed to ask about value, no worries.

I goofed.  I didn't see that it was a carbine.  I assumed it was a rifle when I posted 6002.  It would be a 6003, carbine bundled with scope.  If it's important to you try calling Colt with the serial number and they may tell you how it left the factory.

Here is a neat variation chart:

YES, mine is second from rt and as new for sure. Forgive the value question- I didn't know it wasn't allowed- but thanks for the answer:o)
When I said i had no interest/wasn't a good optic I never intended to actually use the thing, it just doesn't interest me like the SP1 CAR does and
if it could be traded for something I do at no great loss then WTF.
It appears my buddy isn't too keen on selling his pistol either, but said as long as he had first right or refusal it'd be okay so i said the same about the scope. Why not.
In the meantime I will call/send my SP1 s/n (SP17622x) to Colt and see if my gun was sold as R6003 pgk.

So w/out breaking the rules; is $300 and scope worth a nice early HKPSP? I know what the PSP is worth and have a general idea on the scope. Or, if the scope is really mint (I know everybody says that, but it is)
am I doing myself a diservice? While the deal can be undone I'd like not to have any regrets/need to "go there".

Lastly; my buddy has an older (5 digit #- no "1") SP1 (20") w/a Colt 4x, it has the earlier (looking) font on, scope. Question pertains
to the post I quoted. What are the vintages of the two fonts and were the 3x installed on only 16s & the 4x on 20s (as far as factory equipped guns go) and do the factory equipped guns command a premium- or a deduction if w/out orig scope. Obv no way to tell if a scope is orig to the gun so I'd assume
values reflect this?
Thanks Again!

I have 'the later" Japanes 3X20. Still has the Japanese inspection sticker on it. It was on a HBAR Match Target Competition I traded for. It was out of place on it. It's going on my 1979 SP1. Be right at home there.

Well, I just picked up a later Japanese (second from right in VAAR's pic) out of the EE for under $100 & would like to know an approximate time frame also. Would it be correct for my M16A1 or a XM177E2?
