It's kinda hard, or can be.

Look  for black plastic followers
Gold anodizing (the mag will be nearly all gold by now)
and names like Simmonds, Adventureline, and of course Armalite,

Any 30 rounders with #62667 and dark emerald green plastic followers, are the first 30's; other than the full curve 30's.

Wasnt there some very early 25 rounders as well that look alot like these, made just after the waffles but prior to the common 20 rd straight and 30 curved, or where they still Armalite? I seen someone mention it over on the arfiles, was just wondering never seen one though.

The 25 rounder was the first, then the waffle 20, then came the standard 20 with Armalite base, then the Colt .223 marked and then 5.56MM marked. Oops, forgot the UI and 1 in a circle body markings on the 20s.

I know for sure the '66 USAF contract .223 marked 20s have a dull follower and body when they are new, my '66 dated mags have the Gold under gray on the mag body form wear in the receiver.

Most of the 5.56MM marked seem to have a shinier follower and body, these seem to date to '69, but maybe earlier.

One thing I do know for sure, all the Colt 20s I have seen that came with a black plastic follower, have the Okay logo on the inside near the top.

There is not a set in stone way to determine year of manufacture unless they are either of a particular vairety ( 25  or waffle, UI or 1 in circle marked) and/or sealed in original packaging because the base and all the parts can be removed.
You may find a mag from '65 with a black plastic follower and Adventureline base, etc.

Best way I know is to buy them sealed in original dated packaging, then you know what you have!

Good Luck

I just found a couple, one is an 80's civilian type(black plastic follower) and an early "colt" AR 15 dull follower,no black floor plate,it's gray.
