Okay, so I'm doing a 727 build.  Don't want to rehash the A2's are not retro argument.  I was just wondering if anyone knows whether 727's used A1 or A2 flash hiders, whether they used lock washers, peel washers or crush washers, whether they used M4 or CAR handguards, and which stock.  Thanks!

According to the picture in Ekie's Carbine guide;

Carbine handguards, peel washer, and A2 FH

ETA: probably the plastic CAR stock body (though 2002)

Yep to all.

Had one back in 2000-2001.  It had an A2 flash hider with peel washer, fiberlight stock on a 4 position tube but with a CAR lock ring, M4 cut barrel with a standard FSB and standard CAR handguards.  It had the older side sling swivel adapter with with markings for M16A1 and M16A2.  Lower was A2.

Let's face it.  The A2 is retro now.

I seem to be a little out of sync, FH-wise...I thought the progression was -

3-prong
partial cage
full cage

IMO, only the partial cage would require a peel washer...No need to "time" the full cage...

So why would the A2 need a peel washer???

Fixed it for you.

Solid bottom FH's are "A2", and require the peel washer for timing.

They used the peels on A2's early on then switched to the current crush washer. My late 80's-early 90's A2 HBAR has the peel washer.

A2 FH with peel washer

CAR Handguards

Fiberlite 2 position stock with old style lock ring

A2 pistol grip

Lower is marked M16A2, but could be either A2 or A1 style forging.

Thanks for all the insight guys.  I'll post pics here when I'm done, even though its *not retro*.

Cool, I'm slowly working on the same thing.  The Retro Forum is the best place to talk "historical" stuff whether it's "retro" or not, that's for sure.

Pssh!

The continuing evolution of my "BHD" / RO727 / RO723 carbine, which is actually probably not long for this world, as I think it may be split out into two separate projects, a lightweight barreled 723 and a notched barrel 727.

Don't tempt me.  I picked up a small pin 6520 lower a while back for my base.  Replaced the commercial M4 stock it was wearing with a NOS Colt 2 position tube and "N 1" stock, and am collecting the other pieces for the project now.  I've got a bare 723 upper and a bare A2 upper, both dark gray close to the shade of the lower, and both with the carbine feedramps.  Figured once I got each built up (lightweight barrel for the 723 and a stepped barrel for the A2) and could just swap them out on the lower depending on my fancy.  Last thing I need is to get another lower...

The one I was issued in 2000 had a 4 position stock but other than that like you posted above.
