I have a SP1 that I bought about 25 years ago for $350.00 and I have noticed they now sell for $1200 - $1400. Is their high value a collector thing or is there something better about them in the way of accuracy, durability  or dependability than the current crop of ARs like Bushmasters or S&Ws? How do they compare to the current guns in the $1000 range?

Original SP1s certainly have a collectability they didn't used to have––Colt hasn't sold that model rifle in over 20 years now, so they are beginning to be appreciated in that light.  They also have a set of features that was almost entirely absent from the new-rifle market for the last few years.  The retro-type features have gotten a lot more popular now than they were 4 or 5 years ago.

As far as durability or reliability I don't think there's a whole lot more going for them than most top tier AR manufacturer's current products.  A good rifle built from good parts is a good rifle.  Some people are willing to pay more cause it has a pony on the side though.

It is mainly a collector thing.
They're quite a bit lighter than newer 20" ARs.
In my opinion they're going to be about the same in durability and dependability.

1. SP1s 30-40 yrs. ago were built as well as anything built today.
2. They don't make them anymore thus there is a finite amount of them out there.

#1+#2=$1200-$1400

A rough rule of thumb I tell people is: "Buy a Bushmaster to shoot, buy a Colt to collect"

If I were in the market for an A1 today and I lived in a free state I would assemble an NDS which could be made more authentic and shoot just as well..
