Upon some closer examination I found the barrel has been removed.

Yep, need pics!

Are there any markings on the barrel, maybe between the FSB ?

Good gunsmiths can remove the barrel w/o leaving any evidence.

Someone may have just whacked  the end off the barrel and rethreaded it.

You can also remove the barrel without touching the FSB pins...

I can guarantee you that a more than a few members here that could remove that bbl, as well as the taper pins, strip the whole rifle down, reassemble, and you would not be able to tell.

That is a more likey explanation than a "oddity" SP1.

Occums Razor ya know?

There are no pressure marks on the barrel nut showing that the barrel has been removed, I can see the makings showing installation.

Yeah I know that the barrel can be removed without removing the front site.

So, are there any markings on the barrel between the FSB legs?  If it is an original 605 bbl it will have proof or ID markings.  Also, does it have a cast FSB?

Pics ??

[EDIT] Ahhh...  I see you discovered the barrel has been removed.
