...to build a Colt 723 clone using a C/7 upper and A1 carbine pencil barrel?
I basically have a stripped C7 upper and a thin profile 16" barrel from bushmaster but wanted to know if it was OK to use A1 stuff on it. Or would it be better to make a 653 and use a C7 with A1 stuff? Would this have been plausible? Should I assume the 653 to be all A1 and the 723 to be all A2 stuff except for the C/7 upper? When were C7 uppers introduced in the supply chain in the US? I have an XM177E2 clone and wanted to span the time line between it and my M4. |
| According to the Colt Carbine variations guide sticky, I think it would be fine. The guide shows an A1 upper and pencil barrel, and a C7 upper with an M4 barrel, and both are identified as 723. So, I think the C7 and pencil barrel would be fine. I was thinking of doing that myself. |
| FWIW I'm using a 14.5" Colt pencil barrel on mine w/C7 upper - I wanted an M4 barrel for it, but the way things are right now, hell, I HAVE this barrel. It's going to have to be NY compliant as well, (My travel gun) so it will have a fixed A1 stock and a pinned FSC556 compensator. Later on I'll likely have the comp cut off and the work done to make it a 649 barrel - so cutting the bayo lug off isn't a huge tragedy. I hope to have the scratch to send it off to Pat soon for pinning. |

I think I answered my own question. http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll126/mjkberg/misc%20pics/35327Colt_cataloga.jpg Which is precisely what a number of Israeli troops are using right now, The second (or maybe third) batch of carbines Colt shipped them were so configured. |

Are they using A1 rear sight apertures or A2 rear sight apertures? What about the front post? Is it A2 or A1? I thought the Canadians were using C7 rifles with A2 aperture sights? The fixed carry handle Diemaco (now Colt Canada) rifles were all A1 rear sights with the exception of the LMG. The Diemaco removable carry handles were also A1 type. I believe the BUIS used on flat top C7 types might be similar to A2 type, but you see a lot of the C79 ELCAN sights fitted for troops on field operations. |
