The correct name for it is: Crevice Seeking Spring Activated Projectile
Once it has been spring launched it finds the nearest crevice, which is the exact width of the detent.
There are a couple in my livingroom...or in the vacuum cleaner bag.

Too funny   Every now then I'll look down and find one that was launched years ago.  There's probably a half dozen throughout the house.  That's why you need 10-20 of those boogers.

Mad after losing one?

Wait until you take one to the eyelid...
And immediately after the hit as your eye is welling up with tears, trying hard to hold back the explitives so hopefully.....HOPEFULLY you can hear where it decides to land...  Of course ten seconds pass, and there's ne're a sound...

NOW the profanity is perfectly acceptable.

I chipped my favorite handmade ceramic coffee cup with one. Guess I shouldn't have been drinking coffee while building the lower. Of course the chip was right where you put your lips...

Detent in the mail today.
Open the envelope carefully, these things hang wings on 'em.

I feel your pain. I launched one about three weeks ago and no where to be found. Many swear words followed.

The first parts kit I ever got for my first AR build had three of them in it.
Thankfully as one of them mysteriously launched when installing the pivot pin.
I have since found that a 1/4" clevis pin and a punch makes installing the pivot pin detent and spring MUCH easier!

I bought the whiz-bang installation tool and have still managed to shoot two across the room.  I did find one.

Now I aim the detent down at a thick towel folded over a couple of times.  If it shoots, it doesn't go far.

I have the $1.49 1/4" clevis pin and almost had my punch and detent launch on me once.
But it sure beats trying to install without one by hand.
I did 2 by hand before deciding there had to be a better way.

I read a post on here a week or two ago, about using something from a hardware store to substitute for a lost detent pin, but I can't remember what, nor can I find the post.

any ideas?

Coat hanger I think.
Unless I was in a tough spot, I'd continue to use a real detent.

1. Go into the bathroom with lower and parts.
2. Get into the tub or shower stall.  Make sure it's empty.
3. Pull closed shower curtain or door.
4. Plug drain of shower or tub.
5. Insert detent.
6. Have excuse ready for wife, GF, or SO.

After I lost my first one I started using the one gallon zip lock baggie method, cheap and simple.
