Sadly, I don't get as many opportunity's to punch holes in paper with my AR15 as I'd really like to, but I'm a bit of a retro nut (and a self-described lurker), and an avid airsoft enthusiast (I'm wearing my asbestos suit, so your anti-airsoft flames will only warm my skin). For one of my retro-styled airsoft rifles, I'd rather like to try making a faux 50 round magazine, so I'm hoping that someone who has one can answer a couple questions.
How far is it between the two red dots in the image below, on a real 50 round magazine?
Also, it appears to me that the front and back of the magazine are covered in hundred mile an hour tape, is this correct? What is it there for?
Thank you for your time.

Here you are:
11 1/8" 9 1/2" 10 9/16"
These are just with a tape measure, my caliper is only 6".
Also, the bottom-most point of the mag, where your red line ends, is approximately 1" forward of the front of the mag if you run a line straight up.
Don't know about the 100mph tape. There are a couple welded seams there, could be to seal it up, or just for extra grip?

I'd be interested in seeing your retro airsoft.
The closest I've seen is an M16A2 with triangular handguards.

This is my Airsoft Model 602 (work in progress).
The rust by the slip-ring - thats on a bit of wire that I have wrapped around, that I was using to hold a sling last winter. That's also why I have the trigger guard folded down, and secured with a inner-tube rubber band.
And my Airsoft Model 629 (work in progress)
Obviously, my CAR15 needs a lot more work than my M16. new hand guards, pistol grip, stock, moderator, re-profiled barrel, etc.
They're far from perfect, and I've been trying to avoid using any real parts that real-rifle shooters need. My real AR15 is a retro rifle work in progress as well. It's at my parents right now (just got a new roommate, and until I'm more comfortable with them, I'm keeping my real rifles at my parents place).
