| Does a SP1 extractor spring have a little rubber insert? Will it function without one if it is supposed to have one? |
|
Depends on the spring that's in there. I have heard of guys that use either Wolff HD or Colt bronze colored extractor springs w/o an insert, but if the original spring is still there, i'd want an insert.
The earliest inserts were white in color; later a slightly stiffer insert was red, then blue, and most recently the stiffest is black. Frankly, I can't tell any difference in stiffnes between blue and black, and at least one info source states that the color change was only meant to ID the stiffer spring in the late M4s. Unlike the civie market, GI issue springs and inserts are packed together. My experience with a 1976 produced SP1 is that the factory spring weakened over time, and I had to replace it 7 or 8 years ago. The Wolff HD spring and black insert does well, throwing the empties straight out, and not banging them against the side of the upper reciever like you often see.on the older Colts.. |
