I recently picked up a Colt 20" pencil barrel upper.  It is marked CMP chrome bore on the barrel.  I could find no other markings on the barrel.  I know this means its a colt barrel with magnetic particle inspection.  What I want to know is, is it safe to shoot 5.56 in this barrel or can it only shoot .223?

Thanks

All military barrels were chambered for 5.56 - the .223 chambering is a civilian freakness that IIRC is usually only used for Space gun Match weapons using match ammo. Most ARs will run 5.56. Yes, you can use 5.56.
