Are there any retailers, preferably online, who sell lower parts kits that are more authentic  from a retro perspective (color-wise, etc.) than others?

As far as the inexpensive current manufactured parts, Doublestar seems to have a slightly-less-than-black color on the steel parts in the few kits of theirs that I've bought.

RRA is a LITTLE less black than the DPMS kits I've bought...DPMS being very black as you know.

All said and done, you might as well Naval Jelly the steel parts and gunkote/duracoat the aluminum parts on a cheapo kit.  Or just play the waiting game until the nice grey parts pop up.  You will pay the price for military-type parts kits, but you can do that too.

I'm sure others will chime in.

You're pretty in the same spot with most of the LPKs out there. I'd go with a DPMS or other kit that takes to Naval Jelly well, hit the steel parts, then send the trigger guard, magazine button, and charging handle to Victor at US Anodizing.

Thanks for the help, guys. Looks like the Naval Jelly route it is.

Exactly which parts should be gray?  I'm quite confused.

Everything visible outside the receiver, at the least: trigger guard, bolt catch, etc.

Parts I either find gray (Aluminum) or make gray with Naval Jelly (Steel) or send to victor for anodizing.
