Well I had a bunch of parts laying around from my 607 project that I will likely never
complete so when my oldest boy (5 years old) told Mom that he wanted to get Daddy a
new gun for Christmas I thought "What the hell".

I had this nice new Colt 14.5" 1/7 twist barrel laying around

An A1 (Bushmaster I think) upper that I had ground the case deflector off of.

A CMMG bolt carrier group

And a CAR furniture set.

I ordered an Essential arms lower and two A2 flash hiders (to make one extended one)
and I have kindof a 723. I even used an older style big fat round forward assist on it.

I am not "officially" supposed to have it till Christmas but here is a quick photo of it.
What do you guys think of it?

I know it has a slip ring instead of a delta ring but I guess I can call it transitional
Only thing I am missing on it now is the detent and detent spring for the front sight.

It's hard to beat a nice looking carbine built from "leftovers". Looks good.

Thanks. It wasn't too terribly hard, just have to use the right tools and take your time.

How about a tutorial???

C7's are a hell of a lot easier to get than A1's!

Thx,

I used a mill bastard file to take off the majority of it and then "lightly" used a sanding
drum on a dremel to get the contour started I wanted. After that I used a combination
of different sized ball end engraving bits on the dremel and then used some needle
files to work in some of the finer details and then a flat head screw driver to smooth
out the flat spots and make it look "pretty"

YMMV though

[Norm Abrams]Before using power tools though lets talk shop safety[Norm Abrams]

Deffinately wear safety glasses as this shit flys everywhere and is very very small. Dont
try it in pajamas I learned as it gets EVERYWHERE

And for god sakes TAKE YOUR TIME... you can always remove more aluminum, but
replacing it is a bitch.

ETA: Also, when you think you have it where you want it shoot it with a coat of black
spray paint and you will see the flaws you did not know were there before.

Seriously DM - that is a great looking 723 build, and great work on the receiver!

NICE.  Looks 90% Old School to me... luv the 1-7 twist.
Close ups of big button assist, and moderator?  Are the two welded together?

Thanks, At the time NDS was not selling their uppers and I have done more than
one of these and I got this one in a trade.

These pictures are not the best as the overcast here is a bitch and I am not very
steady these days.

The flash hider is the rear portion of an A2 that has been filed down to time with
another A2 FH and torqued down and timed. I then just drilled the hole in the full flash
hider and screwed it on, drilled into the barrel a bit and pinned it and welded over it. All
of the refinishing is done via Krylon Ultra Flat Black. I swear by it and have had it
outlast duracoat.

I guess it really only needs a 2 position tube and maybe some lower receiver work to
complete the whole original look. Since it was all supposed to be for a 607 build I even
trimmed up the front sight base to have no flashing on it.

DM1975, my response was directed more towards 101ABN327, since it sounded like he was having a hard time locating an A1 upper.

I think yours looks great! If it were mine, I don't know if I would change any of it.

I know, I understand. I think NDS makes a fine looking... well..... Everything, but I too
am a cheap bastard and I like tearing up metal A LOT!!!

I think I am going to take your advise and leave this just as it is. It is special to me
since it is my sons Christmas present to me. He is over at the neighbors right
now "buying" it for me as we speak.
