Does anyone know an approximate date on when Colt switched the carrier key staking from the early type (staking from the top) to the current style?

Don't have an exact date, but the two non C marked carriers I have, one chrome smoothside and one parked A1 profile are both single punched. On the other hand, all the C marked A1 carriers I have show the side punched staking. My hunch  is that the side punch started about the time that Colt started using the C  mark in the early '70s.

That is correct, C marked carriers have the modern stakes, and the older unmarked ones have the old style.  Am sure there was a transition, but I have never seen one.

This happened in about September of 1967, at around the 800,000 serial number range (M16A1).
