Looking at the XM16E1 Variations guide just posted, there are some detail photos of uppers described as "round forgings" and "square forgings" The only difference I can see are very slight in the front port door lug, but the "round forging" lug looks more squared on the front face and the "square forging" lug looks more round to me.

Is there something I'm missing?

What is the significance of the two different forgings?

I think that is what it is referring to.  I got confused as I was looking at the lower area witht eh front port door hinge lug, which looks more roudn on the 'square' labelled picture and more square on the 'round' labelled picture!

Maybe they should be called 'Type A forging' and 'Type B' forging, or at least the differences neeed to be circled- it is like trying to find Waldo until you really break down the minor details.

What they are refering to is the little corner up by the Colt proof mark.  It is not all that noticable of a difference, but if you look you can see the round corner is a little more of a radius.

As I understand it, this is what they're talking about:

I think the significant difference is to let you know what to look for if you are trying to buy an earlier forging to match an early marked barrel. If you buy one of each you can readily see the difference.  Kind of different with pics !

That is what they are referring to as "round vs square". Like defiant1 said if you have both styles of receivers the difference stands out & is easy to see.

A square forging receiver has more defined lines overall.
