I saw a post a while back where a talented member removed the brass deflector on his upper.  Any thoughts on doing this as opposed to just buying a new upper?  Any other retro guys try this?

It can be done, is a headache, is labor intensive, and one accidental slip will screw up your receiver.

My suggestions would be:

a) Keep the receiver for another build and find an A1 receiver or buy one of the NDS A1 upper receivers that will be out in a couple of months.

b) Sell the receiver and use the proceeds to fund a used A1 receiver or a new NDS receiver.

I saw the post where someone did that, but I would not attempt it, and I've converted A2 lowers into A1 lowers on my vertical mill.
